Hastings: Shacane wins with stretch drive

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Shacane, under a perfectly time ride by Pedro Alvarado, scored a mild upset in the $111,128 Premier's Handicap.

Shacane broke sharply and was never more than a couple of lengths off of a moderate pace set first by long-shot Iron Top and then by 7-5 favorite Futural, who took over just after a half-mile. Second-choice American Justice joined Futural soon after and those two raced as a team before Futural started to draw away just past the quarter-pole. Futural held a length advantage going into the stretch but couldn't hold off the determined run of Shacane, who caught him in the last few yards. The winning margin was 1 1/4 lengths.

Shacane will be turned out for the remainder of the year.
