Hastings: Friday feature rematches Commandress, Dorreen’s Delight, and Satellite Debris

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Commandress, Dorreen’s Delight, and Satellite Debris finished one-two-three in a 1 1/16-mile $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-old fillies June 15, and they look like the main players in a similar race which will serve as the feature race at Hastings on Friday.

Commandress won the race by three-quarters of a length, and some of the credit should go to apprentice rider Marni Williams, who made an early move into a moderate pace. Commandress did have to go wide while making her winning move, but while she was in full flight both Dorreen’s Delight and Satellite Debris were stuck behind horses and had to wait before they had clear sailing,

Commandress has been a gem of consistency for trainer Len Kasmerski. After finishing fifth in her debut going 5 1/2 furlongs in a $20,000 maiden claiming race at Golden Gate last December, she hasn’t finished worse than third. Her only other win came in a one-mile $20,000 maiden claiming race at Golden Gate on March 18. She shipped to Hastings for her next start and rallied to finish third in a $25,000 claiming sprint.

Williams retains the mount.

Satellite Debris had the worse trip. She started moving with Commandress just past the three-eighths pole, but she was inside and ran into a wall of horses and had to steady. She regrouped and made a strong late move to finish third, a nose behind Doreen’s Delight.

Trained by Terry Clyde, Satellite Debris was stretching out to a middle distance for the first time and is eligible to improve with the experience behind her.

Dorreen’s Delight, trained by Harold Barroby, showed more speed than usual to put herself in a good position just off the moderate pace. She didn’t have to steady, but she was stuck on hold behind horses on the stretch turn while Commandress was making her move three wide. Once clear, she finished full of run but couldn’t quite catch Commandress.

Dorreen’s Delight drew the rail, and if she breaks alertly she should get a nice trip from just off speed that looks as if it may not last.

Talus Ridge is the one they will be chasing, but she is making just the third start of her career, all for trainer Pete Gregory. She is also stepping up in class after scoring a front-running win in a $25,000 claiming race going 6 1/2 furlongs.

Yang has shown tactical speed sprinting and should be able to put some pressure on Talus Ridge.

Hillingdon was an easy winner when she stretched out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time in a $10,000 maiden claiming race June 15.

Marcado rounds out the field.
