HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jockey Rafael Bejarano and trainer Chris Hartman have been a formidable team at Oaklawn Park, and on Friday the duo will attempt to win the featured ninth race with What’s Up Doc. The 6-year-old gelding is one of the chief contenders in a competitive $55,000 starter allowance for 4-year-olds and up over 1 1/16 miles. The race carries an optional claiming price of $50,000 and has a purse of $68,000. Bejarano and Hartman have teamed to win 37 races from 185 starts together for a career win rate of 20 percent. Last season at Oaklawn, the men went 12 for 47 together for a 25 percent strike rate. This season, they were 4 for 24 heading into Thursday, for a 16 percent strike rate. What’s Up Doc could add to the Bejarano-Hartman totals when he stretches out from a runner-up finish at one mile in a $50,000 starter allowance Dec. 13 at Oaklawn. “The last time he went a mile and a sixteenth, he won by 10 lengths with [jockey Luis] Machado at Churchill Downs.” Bejarano said. “I was on him last time, and we he had a good trip.” :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  What’s Up Doc is a son of California Chrome who races for his breeder, Barrett Bernard, and Terry L. Stephens. He is out of the stakes-winning mare Snuggs and Kisses and is a half-brother to O Besos, an overnight stakes winner who has placed in multiple stakes while earning more than $700,000. What’s Up Doc drew post 5 in a field of 10. “It looks like a couple of horses have speed,” Bejarano said. “It will probably set up for my horse. He likes to be a little off the pace. So, we’re looking for a good break, get him in position, and go from there.” Bejarano and Hartman are tied for fourth in their respective divisions in the current standings this meet at Oaklawn. Hartman is 6 for 36 with stable earnings of $598,874, while Bejarano is 12 for 76. “I’m very happy,” said Bejarano, 42. My mounts “have made over $1 million in purses and we’ve just started the meet. My agent is doing a good job. He’s very smart. I’m riding for Ron Moquett, Chris Hartman, [and] Randy Morse, keeping the business going from Kentucky. I’m very happy to be riding for those guys. I don’t ride too many horses – all the horses are very quality horses.” Redemption Time will get good support Friday as he owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, an 85. It was earned for a four-length victory in a $50,000 conditioned claiming route Nov. 28 at Churchill. Oaklawn leading rider Cristian Torres has the mount from post 9 for trainer Kent Sweezey. Redemption Time is a half-brother to multiple Grade 2 winner By My Standards. Brilliant Man finished second to Redemption Time last out. He drew post 10, and trainer Aaron Shorter has given the mount to Walter De La Cruz. Game Keeper also will get support off a clear win over $30,000 conditioned claiming rivals at one mile at Oaklawn. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
