Led by an 8-year-old mare sold for $200,000, a digital reduction sale of racing and breeding stock owned by Harris Farms ended on Tuesday with 75 horses selling for $1,045,000, according to auction host Fasig-Tipton. The multi-day sale was held following the death of farm owner John Harris on July 3. Harris Farms has been at the fore of California Thoroughbred breeding for decades, an era that is in the process of ending. Farm officials said earlier this month that the nine stallions that stood at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., will be relocated and that the 330-acre facility will no longer board or breed mares. Harris Farms, which plans to retain a small number of racehorses and mares, plans to offer more racing and breeding stock at sales in California in September and January, farm officials said. Nu Pi Lambda, an 8-year-old mare by City Zip, was sold for $200,000 to Hinkle Farms and was the only horse in the auction with a six-figure purchase price. Nu Pi Lambda, who sold in foal to Liam’s Map, had one win in 28 starts from 2019 to January 2024, a maiden race at about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita in 2020. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Nu Pi Lambda is a half-sister to Deterministic, an active 4-year-old colt by Liam’s Map, who has won 7 of 13 starts and earned $1,988,515. Deterministic is a six-time stakes winner, including Grade 1 races in his last two starts, both on turf at Saratoga – the $1 million Manhattan Stakes at 1 1/4 miles in June and the $750,000 Fourstardave Stakes at a mile on Aug. 2. Happy to Buy, an unraced 2-year-old filly by Good Magic, and Hennys Crazy Train, a 7-year-old broodmare by Tale of Ekati, each sold for $75,000. There were 51 horses listed as sold for $10,000 or less. Happy to Buy had two workouts at Del Mar in late July for trainer Carla Gaines. Hennys Crazy Train, who sold in foal to Epicenter, won 8 of 26 starts and earned $303,766. In her final start, Hennys Crazy Train finished second in the Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita in April 2024. She was second in an $18,000 claimer at Santa Anita in October 2023. Of the 82 horses in the catalog, 75 were listed as sold, five were withdrawn and two were not sold as of Wednesday morning, according to Fasig-Tipton’s website. Fasig-Tipton officials said there were close to 600 bidder registrations for the auction. Bidding was held from Aug. 14 until early Tuesday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
