Harrington: 2020 live racing season comes to an end

webmaster|Oct 22, 2020

The 74th season of live harness racing at Harrington Raceway came to a close on a beautiful fall evening in central Delaware where a 12-race program was contested.

Driver Allan Davis claimed his second driving title at the track with a meet best 64 wins. Montrell Teague, Art Stafford Jr., Tony Morgan and Victor Kirby rounded out the top five. The 44-year-old Davis is the son of local legend, driver Eddie Davis, who won more than 8,300 races in his driving career.

Meanwhile, Jim King Jr., who has one of the top barns in North America, notched his first training title at Harrington, and completed a sweep of the Delaware circuit after winning the Dover Downs training title for the 2019-20 season. Joe Hundertpfund, Chuck Crissman, Nick Callahan, Clyde Francis (tie) and Mike Hall (tie) completed the top five in the trainer standings. King and his wife Jo Ann Looney-King manage a powerful stable on the west side of Harrington, which includes 2019 Dan Patch Horse of the Year Shartin N and 2019 2-year-old pacing filly honoree Lyons Sentinel among many other top horses.

The Delaware Valley chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association voted Monty's Play the horse of the meet. Monty's Play, a son of Shadow Play, had 7 wins in 10 starts and raced for three different trainers, Joe Hundertpfund, Jason Lynch and most recently Phil Mitchell. Monty's Play was claimed twice at the meet.

In the feature on the closing night card, Zippet Racing Stable's Our White Knight ($4.20, Russell Foster) was a 1:55 4/5 winner in a $12,000 conditioned trotting event for trainer Jay Gannon.

The second race saw a familiar pedigree in George Teague's Letstrytowgleagain ($2.40, Teague), who scored a 1:55 win for trainer Clyde Francis. The son of Mr Wiggles is a full brother to 2015 Horse of the Year Wiggle It Jiggleit.

The live racing circuit in Delaware shifts to Dover Downs, which will conduct live racing on a Monday through Thursday schedule beginning November 2.
