Harrah's Philadelphia: Winston stops Like Clockwork's undefeated run

Greg Reinhart|Sep 24, 2017
Winston 9/24/17
Scott Cantor Winston (#6) keeps the lead in the lane of his Liberty Bell win Sunday at Harrah's Philadelphia

Like Clockwork was going for his seventh straight win in a division of the Liberty Bell for 2-year-old colt pacers on Sunday afternoon at Harrah's Philadelphia, but Winston had other ideas as he pulled an 8-1 upset.

Winston (Corey Callahan) was allowed to set the pace in the $35,000 contest, leading through fractions of 26 4/5, 56 3/5, and 1:24. Somebaddude (Marcus Miller) was poised in the pocket, and Like Clockwork (Mike Wilder) worked out a second-over trip behind Iluvtomakemoney (Tim Tetrick).

In the stretch Winston held on to the top spot while Somebaddude and Like Clockwork closed in, and at the wire Winston held safe by a quarter of a length over Somebaddude, with Like Clockwork half a length back in the third position. The time for the mile was 1:52 1/5, a career-best clocking.

Winston, a Western Ideal-Paris Hanover (Camluck) colt is trained by John Butenschoen for owner Crawford Farms Racing. This was Winston's second win from eight career starts, and he has now earned $30,610. He paid $19.60 to win.

Callahan and Butenschoen also won one of three $30,000 Liberty Bell tests for 2-year-old colt trotters with Scirocco Rob in 1:55 3/5. He tracked the cover of Max's Beast (Andy Miller), then got past him in the final stride to score by a nose in 1:55 3/5. Pace-setter I Know My Rights (Tyler Buter) came in third.

This was the third victory in nine tries for Scirocco Rob, an Explosive Matter-Fun At Parties (Lindy Lane) gelded. He has banked $95,675 and returned $9.40 to win as a 7-2 shot today.

The other winning trotters in the Liberty Bell were Mississippi Storm (1:55, Andy Miller) and Evaluate (1:56, Tim Tetrick), and the other pacing division went to Points North (1:52 1/5, Tetrick).
