Harrah's Hoosier Park: Whoomp topples Somemore Blue in latest Indiana Sire Stakes showdown

The fifth installment in the Whoomp versus Somemore Blue saga saw Whoomp, driven by John De Long for trainer Roger Welch, take down her rival in the $93,500 Indiana Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacing fillies at Harrah's Hoosier Park on Saturday (August 15).

Dueling off of the wings, Whoomp shot out of post five while being matched by Somemore Blue (Marcus Miller) in post two, opening up a four length advantage from the rest of the five-horse field. Somemore Blue offered little opportunity for Whoomp to slide by easily, which forced Whoomp to drop in the pocket and follow Somemore Blue through the first fraction in 25 4/5. The early excitement stalled on the backstretch as the field remained unchanged to the half-mile mark in 55 1/5.

Whoomp elected to trail behind Somemore Blue, hoping to take advantage of the tiring track conditions, and the attention focused on the top pair through the three-quarters in 1:23 4/5. Rounding into the lane signaled Whoomp's time to party, as she punched the accelerator, blazing past Somemore Blue to the wire in 1:49 3/5, prevailing by 1 1/2 lengths behind the strength of a 25 3/5 final quarter. Somemore Blue settled for second after the battle down the stretch. It's My Story was third, eight lengths behind the winner.

Whoomp snagged her fourth win of the year and brought her lifetime earnings to $561,976. Whoomp is owned by William De Long, Wm Patrick De Long, and Jesse De Long. Whoomp was bred by William De Long and Patrick De Long.

Live racing resumes next week on Tuesday (August 18) at Harrah's Hoosier Park with a 14-race card, featuring the traditional $10,000 guaranteed late Pick 4 and the $10,000 guaranteed late Hoosier High 5 done in partnership with the USTA's Strategic Wagering program.
