Harrah's Hoosier Park: Upsets in both Indiana Sires Stakes events on Saturday
The Indiana Sires Stakes season for 2-year-old colt and gelding trotters began with two divisions on Saturday night at Harrah's Hoosier Park, one with a purse of $42,400 and the other worth $39,500.
Swingforthefences (Mike Oosting), who was second in his debut in an overnight race last Saturday, was a 12-1 winner in the first grouping. Away sixth, he improved position through the middle-half and used a 27 4/5 final kicker to go from third at three-quarters to a half-length victory in 1:57 1/5. Brookview Bolt (Sam Widger) crossed the wire third but was elevated to second when unofficial second-place finisher King Felix (Doug Rideout) was moved behind him for a lapped-on break at the wire.
By Swan For All, Swingforthefences was bred by Concord Stud Farm LLC. and brought $100,000 at the Standardbred Horse Sale. He's out of the stakes-winning Muscles Yankee mare Sunday Yankee and is owned by David McDuffee and L&L Devisser LLC. He paid $26.20 to win.
Breckenridge, driven by trainer Dan Shetler, took command after the 59 1/5 half in the other flight, rang up three-quarters in 1:29 and trotted home in 29 1/5 to defeat Gucci Goo (Oosting) by three-parts of a length in a 1:58 1/5 mile. No Lingering (Ricky Macomber Jr.) got third.
Shetler also bred Breckenridge with Sawgrass Farms LLC. and now co-owns him with Dojea Stables. Breckenridge, who is by Class Included, a full brother to Muscle Hill, finished eighth after making an early break in the same race last week that Swingforthefences exited. Breckenridge, who is out of the ABC Garland mare Dazzling Miss, was dispatched at 7-1 and returned $16.20 to win.
