Driver Kyle Wilfong improved to two-for-two in his career in the Dan Patch Stakes for older pacing males at Harrah's Hoosier Park, as after winning the race in 2023 with 17-1 shot Ponda Warrior, he guided 20-1 offering Dunkin' to victory in this year's $300,000 edition, which took place on Friday night. Christchurch (Lewayne Miller), the second-longest price on the board at 31-1, rocketed to the lead from post five and put the opening quarter on the board in 26 seconds, with El Rey (Yannick Gingras) positioned in the pocket and second choice Buzzsaw Russ (John De Long) in the three-hole. Dunkin landed in fifth and favored Coach Stefanos (Trace Tetrick) was back in eighth. Nobody moved at Christchurch in the second quarter, and that allowed Miller to steal a 28 3/5 panel to put the half on the board in 54 3/5, but business picked up on the last turn as Buzzsaw Russ was guided first-over. Buzzsaw Russ was tracked by Charlie May (Brett Miller), Dunkin', Why Not Now (Jordan Ross) and Coach Stefanos in the outer tier. Buzzsaw Russ pushed past Christchurch and took command on the rim before the 1:22 2/5 three-quarters, and then De Long and Buzzsaw Russ got some separation on the others in the upper part of the stretch, leading to Buzzsaw Russ enjoying a four length advantage with an eighth to go. Buzzsaw Russ began to come back to the field late, though, and taking advantage was Dunkin', as his 26 second flat last quarter propelled him to the triumph by a length in 1:49 1/5. Buzzsaw Russ and a charging Coach Stefanos ended up dead-heating for second and Charlie May was fourth. Seven Colors (Marvin Luna), who was last at three-quarters, sprinted home in 25 2/5 to get fifth. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter "He's a good horse. He's won more races than the majority of them in there," offered Wilfong. "He just speaks for himself. He wants to win. I was behind two good horses and the fractions were pretty good for it. He had plenty of kick on the end. "If you got him out of the gate, he was supposed to be pretty tough. He showed some good lines at Yonkers. Nick (Clegg - whose wife Betty owns the horse) told me, 'if you get him out of the gate, you'll win the Dan Patch.'" A 4-year-old gelding by Pet Rock, Dunkin' is trained by Scott Di Domenico. The Stonegate Standardbred Farms-bred won for the 36th time in his career and has now earned $603,022. He paid $42.00 to win.
