A card packed with Grand Circuit races on Friday night at Harrah's Hoosier Park got going with the $110,000 The Elevation and $100,000 Madison County for 2-year-old colts and geldings on both gaits. Newsroom (David Miller), making his first start outside New Jersey, improved his record to six-for-six by winning The Elevation for the pacers in 1:51 4/5. Miller had Newsroom out and moving from the pocket as Martz Telly (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) hit the opening quarter in 28 seconds and then was well-rated through middle-half panels of 56 4/5 and 1:25. Several horses had a chance to chase down and go past Newsroom in the sprint for home, but he held sway all the way to the wire, defeating Noblesville (Yannick Gingras), who angled out of third beyond three-quarters, by about a neck. Premier Romeo (Kyle Wilfong) closed well in the passing lane to get third. "Really the fractions were pretty soft for him. He did have a horse right at him all the way through the stretch, but the last few feet he held him off," Miller offered post-race. "I think he's versatile. He's laid-back and takes care of himself, and I think he's got a big set of lungs." Joe Holloway trains Newsroom, an Always B Miki colt bred by Mark Mullen and Stephen Dey and purchased for $30,000 at the 2022 Standardbred Horse Sale, for owner Val D'Or Farms. He has put away $170,775 to go with his undefeated status and returned $2.20 to win as the 1-9 favorite. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Gruesome Twosome, who has won three legs of the Indiana Sires Stakes, added a Grand Circuit credit by taking the Madison County for trotters in 1:54 2/5 for co-owner/trainer/driver Daryl Bontrager. Starting from post eight, Gruesome Twosome left out and pressed on two-wide to take the top spot away from Topmost (John De Long) beyond the 28 second opening quarter. From there, Gruesome Twosome was untested through a 57 2/5 half and 1:26 4/5 three-quarters, then used a 27 3/5 final quarter to win the event by 2 1/2 lengths over Topmost. Elhelpski (Peter Wrenn) collected third. A colt by You Know You Do, Gruesome Twosome was bred by Merle Yoder and fetched $17,000 at last year's Hoosier Classic Yearling Sale. Ira Steinberg co-owns Gruesome Twosome, who has banked $172,125 to go with his record of 5-1-0 from seven outings. He paid $5.60 to win as the 9-5 favorite.
