Harrah's Hoosier: Longshots come through in Indiana Sires Stakes

It was a night ruled by upsetters at Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, as the oval played host to two divisions of Indiana Sires Stakes action for the 2-year-old pacing fillies on the evening's 14-race card on Thursday, September 9. The fillies have now completed round four of their six-round series.
Lorraine Smoke, with driver James Yoder, scored her maiden-breaking win in stunning fashion, as she pulled the biggest upset of the evening, to the tune of 85-1, in the first split. Uninvolved throughout much of the mile, Yoder, who also trains and co-owns the filly with Cheyenne Yoder, moved the filly to the outside late in the lane, and she found a 26 1/5 closing quarter to scorch past her rivals. Stopping the timer in 1:53 2/5, Lorraine Smoke was able to stick a nose in front of the heavily-favored JJ Endofanera and John DeLong steps before the wire.
The victorious daughter of JK Endofanera-Rebid recorded her first lifetime win from nine starts. Lorraine Smoke paid $173.80 to win.

The second flight stayed with the upset trend, as Ms Quick Sand and Brandon Bates converted a pocket trip into a 26-1 score. Stopping the timer in 1:53, Ms Quick Sand sat the pocket and then was able to track down the heavily-favored and pace-setting Trick Of The Light and Mike Oosting. Goo Goo Won and Lewayne Miller rounded out the trifecta. Ms Quick Sand returned $54.20 at the betting windows.
Trained by Ken Rucker, who co-owns the filly with the Panhellenic Stable Corp., Ms Quick Sand recorded her second win from seven lifetime starts. The time of 1:53 was also a new lifetime mark for the daughter of Always A Virgin-Sand Pleasure. The victory was also one of four winners on the evening's 14-race card for Bates.
The upset winners in the stakes action also resulted in the late Pick 5 sequence going unsolved. A $3,269 carryover will kick-start the early pick 5 sequence on Friday night with a $15,000 guaranteed pool in races 1-5. Indiana Sires Stakes action will also continue at Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Friday, with the 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings highlighting the evening's 14-race card.
