Harness: Yearlings by first-crop sires dominate Ohio Selected Jug Sale

First-crop sires Downbytheseaside, Fear The Dragon, Long Tom, and What The Hill were the top dogs in Friday's Ohio Selected Jug Sale, as the top 14 sellers were all by one of them. Fear The Dragon claimed the top spot as his colt Springbridge Dragn fetched $120,000 from Burke Racing LLC.
HIP 175 Springbridge Dragn, consigned by Spring Haven Farm and Stonebridge Farm, is out of the Mach Three mare Stonebridge Damsel, making him a half-brother to the Big Jim gelding Springbridge Duel, a two-time Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series winner as a rookie this year.
Downbytheseaside had a trio of colts fetch $100,000 - HIP 78 Seaside Tea Tea, HIP 102 Moscow Mitch, and HIP 103 Fire By The Sea.
Brian Brown bought Seaside Tea Tea, consigned by Winterwood Farm as agent for Parent Racing Stable and HIP 103 Fire By The Sea, consigned by Spring Haven Farm as agent for Enos Weaver. Seaside Tea Tea is out of the Western Hanover mare Tea Pot Hanover, who earned $188,483 to go with a mark of 1:52 3/5 and Fire By The Sea is out of the Towner's Big Guy mare Wildfire Princess, who has thrown three six-figure earners, including $206,061 earner Prsntpretynperfect, who Brown trained during her career. Moscow Mitch, consigned by Diamond Creek Farm as agent for Ernie Lambright, went to Greg Luther. Moscow Mitch is the first foal out of the No Pan Intended mare Wicked Intentions, who put away $221,005 during her racing career to go with a mark of 1:53 1/5.
HIP 198 Bamboo was the highest-priced yearling by Long Tom, going to Dennis Owens for $80,000. Bamboo, a colt consigned by Anvil And Lace Farm as agent for Walstan Farm, is the second foal out of the Valley Victor mare Love To Win. She regularly raced in the Indiana Sires Stakes program during her career, banking $84,999 with a mark of 1:56.
HIP 258 Carefree Highway headed up the group sired by What The Hill, fetching $70,000 from Martinez Equine Agent. Carefree Highway, a filly, was consigned by Hickory Lane Horse Farm and is the third foal out of the Angus Hall mare Margie. Margie, who had a mark of 1:55 2/5 to go with $267,502 in the bank, was the runner-up in the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final for 3-year-old trotting fillies in 2014.
A total of 272 yearlings sold during the session, bringing a gross of $6,705,000 and an average of $24,651. This average was up 20.9 percent over last year, when 243 horses sold for an average of $20,383.
