Unable to get licensed due to past on- and off-track incidents, Walter Case Jr, who sits 10th on the all-time wins list with 11,049 despite fewer than 100 drives over the last 18 years, is listed to drive two horses on Saturday at Cumberland Raceway. Case last drove on November 12, 2017 at the now closed Scarborough Downs and competed in 53 races that year. Previously he drove 25 times in 2008 and got 730 mounts in 2003, the last year he came close to a full workload. When reached for comment, Case was unsure what the future would bring. "It is tough picking up drives when you're 60," said the former Yonkers driving champion, who would join a very successful 61-year-old Bruce Ranger (9,492 career wins) if he was to become a regular in the driving colony at the Maine track. "Bruce [Ranger] could be the Governor of Maine," joked Case about Ranger, who was born in Portland and lives in Lewiston. "You need the power, that is the main thing. When you drive for guys like [Karl] Butterfield and [Michael] Caruso, when they have the horse in the right class and tuned up, you very rarely lose." Case added that he certainly wouldn't embarass himself in the bike and that he is done looking back. "I did my time. Either you hate me or like me. I drive horses the best I can; sometimes good and sometimes bad. But I don't dwell on it anymore," said Case. Case's drives come with Personnel Space in race four and Arsenal in race 10. Post time on Saturday at Cumberland is 2:30 PM.
