Harness: Somewhere Fancy strikes in Gold Cup & Saucer
Somewhere Fancy backed up his elimination win with a 1:50 4/5 effort in the 59th edition of The Guardian Gold Cup & Saucer on Sunday night at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Driven by Simon Allard, Somewhere Fancy was able to settle into the fourth position while Rockin In Heaven (J.B. Harris) and Bet On Brett charged away quickest. Bet On Brett landed on the lead first, but Rockin In Heaven drove on and was able to secure the lead passing the 27 2/5 opening quarter. Rockin In Heaven, who was the favorite, kept up a quick tempo in the second quarter, getting to the half in 54 3/5, with Somewhere Fancy coming first-up just past that marker.
Somewhere Fancy was able to sustain his bid and took the lead nearing the 1:23 1/5 three-quarters, then paced on, with Allard celebrating the three-length victory in style. Rockin In Heaven held second, with Rose Run Quest (Marc Campbell) third.
"Everybody knows in the Gold Cup you always go a little crazy sometimes," said Allard. "I was hoping they were going to do it, cause there's was no way I was going to cross over those guys. It was great. I got away in a perfect spot, and I got lucky. He's a classy horse and doesn't care about anything. Nothing bothers him, the post parade didn't bother him, he was great."
Rene Allard trains Somewhere Fancy, a 7-year-old Somebeachsomewhere stallion, for owner John Mehlenbacher. This was Somewhere Fancy's 36th career win, and he has now earned C$627,165. He was sent off at 3-1 and paid $8.30 to win.
