As the harness racing landscape has shifted over the last decade, many trainers have had to alter their plans and refocus on new paths to success. For trainer Paul Kelley that has led to a restructuring that finds him focusing on dual eligibility, with most of his horses fitting the unique Massachusetts Sire Stakes program while also having various options in other locations. With 14 horses currently in training at Sunshine Meadows, Kelley is putting the finishing touches on his three sophomores, while preparing most of his 2-year-olds for action later this summer.

One of the big complaints I hear from racing fans is that we lose so many great horses to the breeding barn after their 3-year-old seasons. Efforts have been made to keep stallions on the track: the addition of many more rich races for the veterans, the so-called Gural rule, which declared that offspring of a stallion who did not race at 4 (unless injured) could not race in older stakes at the Meadowlands, Tioga or Vernon Downs, and other initiatives.

Always Bstunning N was put into action in the early stages and posted a major upset, handing Louies Girl N, who had previously been unbeaten in North America, her first defeat in capturing the first of four $50,000 divisions in the second leg of the MGM Ursula McIntyre Pacing Series at MGM Yonkers Raceway on Friday night (April 3). Driven by Tim Tetrick, Always Bstunning N paced the mile in 1:52 1/5, flying home in 27 seconds flat.
