What kind of car do you drive? Range Rover. Favorite dinner meal? Snack? Salmon; Muffins. What has been your favorite track since coming to the U.S.? The Meadowlands. I've had a bit of success there and I love racing under the lights with New York City as the backdrop. There is something special about racing there. I really like The Red Mile, too. Racing out there was pretty cool. What is your favorite track back home in Australia? Tabcorp Park, Menangle, in Sydney. It is a seven-eighths track. It is the biggest track we have down there and is probably as close as it gets to The Meadowlands.  How often is racing on your mind? Every single day. I try to distract myself with other things and have a little bit of a life outside of racing. What is your favorite thing to do outside of racing? Adventure around, whether it is places around the city or if I get a gap in my schedule, travel someplace different. What is your favorite sport to watch?  Probably racing. What is one thing about you most fans/bettors don't know? I'm the best-looking McCarthy brother. What is one word that describes harness racing for you? Passion. How did you get started in the sport?  Family. Dad was a trainer and driver. That's how we got started, my oldest brother Luke and Andy and myself. We all got the bug early on. Was there ever a chance you wouldn't go into Harness Racing? Early on, we all looked at alternatives leaving High School. I think Andrew even did a trade for a little bit before he started with the horses full-time. I pretty much left High School at 16 and started the horses full time. I haven't looked back since. Who is the best McCarthy brother in the bike? I think we are all pretty individual. We all have a bit of a mixed driving style and I'd like to think we all incorporate a little bit from each other. What is the best advice you've ever gotten about harness racing? Keep showing up and doing your job. Sometimes things aren't going right and you just have to keep showing up until it turns for you. What was your favorite moment in harness racing? Winning the 2018 Inter Dominion with Tiger Tara. That's the biggest race Down Under. It is really prestigious. How good of a driver were you Down Under? Where were you ranked? I was always in the Top 20 in the country. In Sydney, where we race at Menangle, I was the leading driver for the last five years, and maybe three years in the state, which is the broader tracks as well. There is a Metropolitan and a state premiership. Metro is the city, like just The Meadowlands, and the state one includes all the tracks in the state as well.  Which is the best horse you've ever driven? Again, Tiger Tara. He is by Bettor's Delight and was a top free-for-all horse. We won a bunch of Grand Circuit races Down Under with him. What made you decide to come over from Australia? I wanted to do it for a while. I probably would've come over earlier if not for the success I was having Down Under. I wanted to ride that out. It was still tricky to come but I managed to get over and think it was just good timing. The success that Andrew's had definitely played a role it making a way for me to come here. What's the one race that you most want to win in North America? Watching Andy win the Hambletonian this year was cool. That would be special, though I haven't thought much about it. For now, I'm just happy to get a winner wherever I can.  Were you in the U.S. yet when Andy won the Hambletonian with Ramona Hill? It happened just before I came. We all got together in front of the TV back home like we do most Saturday and Sunday mornings in Australia to watch The Meadowlands. The coverage was fantastic and I pretty much felt like we were there that day. You've put up a solid 14% win percentage in your first few months of driving. Have you been happy with your efforts? I've been really lucky and received great opportunities since I arrived. The first six weeks was pretty overwhelming for me. I was driving a lot and I hadn't driven in the States before. The racing is quite a bit different and we are racing in the shorter, wider bikes, too, so I was doing my best to adjust as quickly as I could and trying to get the best results I could.  Do you envision the U.S. becoming your permanent residence? Yeah. I was fortunate to secure a good Visa, so I don't have to go back for a few years. I plan to take a serious crack at it and if I enjoy it and success comes my way, relocate. At this stage I'd call the States home. Can you compare racing in Australia to the U.S.? Sydney is as close as you can get to the U.S. They have mostly mile racing, just the bikes are a little more narrow. Because it is a bigger track, we do use short bikes there. The caliber of horses that race in the Open, they get down in pretty fast time, like (1:)48 or (1:)49 miles. The genuine tempo for most races here is a lot faster. What's the biggest race you've won since arriving on these shores? One of the stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies at The Red Mile with Anoka Hanover for trainer Noel Daley. If you could choose any horse in history to drive, which horse would it be and why? Probably Bettor's Delight or Somebeachsomewhere. How did COVID-19 affect your life? I've been fortunate. Back in Australia, they managed it well and I was able to continue working. When my Visa got sorted to come to the U.S., things were well on their way here for racing. It hasn't really affected me too much other than the few little things that have affected everyone's life. If you had the power to change one thing in the sport, what would it be? I don't know how to do it, but probably to get more exposure for the sport. We have such a great product to offer people. Do they do a better job in Australia of marketing? Definitely not. That's just the way the industry is worldwide. There are so many other different products and sports on the market, we just need to figure out a different way to market our product. How do you view the future of harness racing? I'd like to think it is healthy and doing well. I'd like to think there is a lot of longevity in it for myself and future generations. Time for the stretch drive: Best Horse You Ever Saw: Be Good Johnny -- He was an old horse my dad had. He was so fast and won $1.7 million before he unfortunately broke down. Best Race you ever saw: Wiggle It Jiggleit winning the Little Brown Jug. I just watched it again a few weeks ago. It still gives me chills. Favorite TV Show?: Seinfeld. Trotters or Pacers?: Pacers.
