Harness: Plenty of star power available in Saturday's Standardbred Horse Mixed Sale
There really is something for everyone in Saturday's Standardbred Horse Mixed Sale at Timonium. Whether you want a trotter, pacer, younger or older, horse or mare, the sale likely has something in your price range.
It would be easy to pluck 25 to 30 horses worth mentioning from the 250 or so horses slated to sell. We'll narrow it down to an elite eight to highlight in this space. Before digging in, it is worth noting some key horses that have been pulled from the sale, including Breeders Crown winner Next Level Stuff and Ohio champion Guinevere Hall. A full list of "outs" can be found here.
HIP 1370 LOVE MUFFIN
Here's a 2-year-old trotting filly from a family that produced Broadway Schooner ($885K) and the speedy Cooler Schooner (1:51 3/5 at 2). In addition to a potential broodmare prospect down the road, she has won seven of 10 starts this year in The Stallion Stakes in Pennsylvania while earning $114,859, so she has value on the track as well.
HIP 1400 PHILLY HANOVER
Has proven to be a solid performer in upper conditioned ranks and a spot player in stakes competition versus older pacing mares. In the right barn she could easily gross $150,000 a year racing just in overnights.
HIP 1404 DIP ME HANOVER
Trotting filly is 17-for-27 in the money as she completes her second year of racing. She is still eligible to the Matron and already has $377K on her card. There is obviously appeal here on the racing and breeding end.
HIP 1449 BEADS
Three-year-old trotting colt is fast and erratic. He went on quite a roll in August and September while capturing the Kentucky Sire Stakes final but has since put in breaks in three of his last four starts. He's in-to-go Friday in the $140,000 Carl Erskine at Harrah's Hoosier Park if you want one final look.
HIP 1451 PLAY TRIX ON ME
Sophomore trotting colt missed by just a nose in the Breeders Crown last Saturday and like Beads starts in the Erskine on Friday. While under the radar, he's proven himself multiple times versus the top horses in his age group.
HIP 1461 CAPTAIN VIDEO
Finished in 26 seconds in a qualifier at The Meadowlands on October 31, but that was his first start since October 3 at The Red Mile. Son of Captaintreacherous clearly has some talent but only has 14 starts in two years, which is concerning. Will he mature as a 4-year-old?
HIP 1502 U S CAPTAIN
Four-year-old has proven himself as a solid option in the upper conditioned ranks with numerous miles in the 1:49 range. He's also ultra-consistent and has plenty of early speed.
HIP 1817 SISTER SLEDGE
Here's another with broodmare potential as well as the ability to pick up big coin on the track. Through two years of racing, this Father Patrick-sired trotting filly has won $844K and routinely competes with the best in her division.
The final session of the Standardbred Horse Sale offers HIPs 1300 to 1525 and 1800 to 1829 on Saturday. Start time is 10 AM at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland.
