Harness: Ohio Select Sale is the place to be
The Ohio Selected Jug Yearling Sale takes place Friday (Sept. 18), and consignors and buyers alike rolled into the Pickaway Ag Center in Circleville in search of that next Buckeye State champion.
Because six of the eight $300,000 Ohio Sire Stakes "Scarlet" finals at Scioto Downs were captured by graduates of the "Ohio Select" auction, many of the top names in our sport were on hand for the annual Thursday (Sept. 17) "Show Day."
While the sale is conducted by the Lexington Selected Yearling Sales Co., the auction is owned by the Ohio Harness Horse Breeders, a group of local Standardbred breeding farms that send many of their best bred and conformed yearlings to this sale each autumn.
"The traffic has been robust all day, so we anticipate another good sale," noted perennial leading consignor Arch Yoder of Rose Run Farm. Throughout the large Pickaway facility, it was apparent that the buyers were here to do business.

Kevin Greenfield, owner of Hickory Lane Farm and renowned syndicate manager was equally optimistic. "We are excited that we have another crop to sell by In Range," Greenfield said. "This is the third year for this stallion and hopefully buyers can find another champion in this group."
Spring Haven Farm, also a perennial leading consignor, as well as the breeder of two champions this season, is well-represented at the sale.
"Once again, we are excited about this year's sale," said Senena Esty, the president of the Ohio Harness Horse Breeders and also the breeder of Hambletonian runner-up and Ohio champion Big Ranger.
"There has been a lot of interest for yearling previews this season at the area farms. We are encouraged by the added attention, but the results speak for themselves," Esty noted. "People know this is the place to find the best horses in the Ohio program."
Ohio races for over $100 million annually, with three tiers of Sire Stakes, four pari-mutuel tracks, and 66 County Fairs, providing ample opportunity for horses to race in every division and skill level.
In addition to a large group of 'first foals' from credentialed former race mares, many of Friday's offerings are brothers or sisters to world champions, Ohio champions and Grand Circuit stakes winners.
