Harness: Multiple yearlings could light up the board on opening day at Harrisburg

Most of the regional sales are in the books and the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale has come and gone, so now all eyes turn to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the annual Standardbred Horse Sale that begins on Monday (11/4). As is the norm, the first three sessions will be for the yearlings and then the Mixed Sale will go on Thursday and Friday.
"The economy is strong. People have money to spend. There's a lot of good news in harness racing right now,” Standardbred Horse Sales Company President/CEO & Treasurer Paul Spears said about the rising trends in the market. “New Jersey has a new source of purse funds. The Ohio program is rapidly improving, and there's even a glimmer of hope in Illinois, so I think people are optimistic about the industry. The sales nationally have reflected that optimism, and we hope to share in it."
Last year’s opening session of the Standardbred Horse Sale saw a massive rise in gross and average over the same day’s action in 2017. The average was up 24.2 percent from 2017 ($93,541 versus $75,305), and the gross surged 28.8 percent, going from $12,350,000 for 164 yearlings in 2017 to $15,902,000 for 170 horses in 2018. With that said, while Spears has his ideas of what an individual might go for, in the end it’s the people raising their hands that make the ultimate decision on the prices.
"I usually go into a sale with global expectations, similar to what I said earlier. For individual horses, we make our projections, but buyers ultimately determine the price, so I rarely make predictions about the sale of any individual horse," he remarked.
Certainly one of the big headlines coming out of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale was the $1 million threshold for an individual yearling being topped not just once, but twice. Given the positive indicators within the harness racing industry and the continued economic success going on through the world, Spears sees that happening again going forward.
"Certain people at the top are willing to spend large dollars to get the exact individual that they want,” Spears stated. “As long as the economy remains good, and the outlook for the industry is positive, I would expect this trend to continue."
The group of first-crop sires, which include the likes of Always B Miki, Bar Hopping, and Southwind Frank, enjoyed success in Lexington, and there are plenty more of them on offer in Harrisburg, joining yearlings by established sires such as Muscle Hill, Chapter Seven, Father Patrick, Captaintreacherous, Somebeachsomewhere and Sweet Lou.
"I expect the same type of response in Harrisburg,” said Spears of the first-crop sires. “We have some equally great-bred individuals, and we also have plenty of them. We certainly expect this trend to continue. We have 32 Always B Mikis, 28 Bar Hoppings, and 14 Southwind Franks, which actually represents his crop very well.
“We also have 32 Muscle Hills, 29 Chapter Sevens, 47 by Captaintreacherous, 45 by Somebeachsomewhere, 26 Sweet Lous and 25 Father Patricks, so we're very confident that we will have the selection of top sires that the buyers are looking for."
Monday’s session begins at noon, with the remaining sessions all starting at 10 A.M., and HIPS 1-172 kick off the action. Narrowing down a list of such a collective group of well-bred yearlings available on the first day was not an easy task, but from an initial group of 22 that really stood out, here are 13 horses to keep an eye, or both eyes on, as they pass through the ring.
