Harness: Meadowlands to offer facility to outside horsemen groups
In a press release sent out this morning (6/9), The Meadowlands announced that it would consider leasing the facility to horsemen's associations looking to get racing opportunities for its members.
"Pending NJ Commission and state approval, The Meadowlands would consider leasing the track to horsemen's associations to add a race card beginning next week for a few weeks as necessary until more tracks open, provided they could fund the purses from their purse or sires stake account."
Additionally, the release cited that 777 horses dropped into the box for racing this weekend at The Meadowlands and due to "compromised revenue streams" the track could not afford to offer more than 13 races each day (total of 26 races and 260 horses).
Meadowlands President Jeff Gural confirmed that any outside horsemen's association would be welcome and said the plan is for The Meadowlands to share the revenue. "We would keep half the simulcast revenue to cover our costs, assuming the economics work."
