Harness: Joe Holloway to be inducted into Delaware's Sports Hall of Fame

Hambletonian Society/Breeders Crown Veteran trainer Joe Holloway

Harness racing Hall of Famer Joe Holloway will be honored along with eight others at induction ceremonies for the Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington.

Holloway, 66, who graduated the University of Delaware in 1978 with a degree in animal science, is the second member of his family to enter the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. His brother, Jack, was a 2008 inductee.

While Jack coached wrestling, Joe tackled horse racing and was selected for the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Holloway's eighth and ninth Breeders Crown trophies came courtesy of his tenth divisional champion, Perfect Sting, who won harness racing's end-of-season premier event in both 2020 and 2021.

A mainstay in the training colony at harness racing's premier venue, he teamed with owner David Rovine with Tuff Choice, winner of 13 straight races at the Meadowlands in 1985.

It would be his masterful handling of $1.9 million-earner Jenna's Beach Boy that would put Holloway into the spotlight. Jenna's Beach Boy would win three Breeders Crowns, take home divisional honors in 1994, 1995 and 1996, earn Pacer of the Year in 1995 and 1996, and establish a world record of 1:47 3/5 that stood for a decade.

Holloway was voted the sport's top trainer in 1995, thanks, in part, to She's A Great Lady, who earned just shy of $1 million and was a divisional champion in both 1995 and 1996.

Another Holloway-trained post-season honoree was 2015 Three-Year-Old Pacing Filly of the Year Divine Caroline.

Joe and his wife, Judy, reside in Freehold, New Jersey, and have two sons, Tyler and Chris.
