According to co-owner Tristan Sjoberg, 2021 Hambletonian winner Captain Corey has been retired due to injury and will stand stud in 2022.
"It is with great regret that the connections of Captain Corey have to announce that his racing career has been prematurely ended by injury," said Sjoberg. "At a follow-up consultation at the end of last week the scans revealed significantly more damage to the coffin bone and joint than was originally thought. Based on this veterinarian advice, the ownership constellation has decided unanimously to retire him to stud.
"We aim to finalize the details of his stallion career imminently and hope to make further announcement in relation to this before or at the start Harrisburg sale."
Captain Corey retires with a career record of 14-10-2-0, earnings of $1,090,333 and a lifetime mark of 1:51 set at The Downs at Pocono. In addition to the Hambletonian at The Meadowlands, Captain Corey won the Beal Memorial at Pocono during his abbreviated 3-year-old season. At 2 he took the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final.
Co-owner Ake Svanstedt trained the son of Googoo Gaagaa throughout his career for Sjoberg's Knutsson Trotting Inc., S R F Stable and Midnight Sun Partners Inc.
