Harness: Broodmares seek instant success with first foals on Tuesday at Lexington

Greg Reinhart|Oct 06, 2020

Much of the attention was focused on the first session at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, but there are plenty of fashionably-bred options for buyers that will go through the ring during the second night, which will be on Tuesday this year. Let’s look at some of them that are the first foals out of their successful and/or well-bred dams.

On the trotting side, Cantab Hall and Chapter Seven stood out with yearlings that are the initial offerings out of their mothers. HIP 185 Sun Temple is a Cantab Hall filly out of Temple Ruins, a Donato Hanover mare who was a stakes winner at both 2 and 3, earning $288,526. Sun Temple was bred by Bluestone Farms LLC. and Fredericka Caldwell, and is being consigned by the Caldwell family’s Cane Run Farm as agent.

“She’s a nice filly. She has plenty of length and is a good size, especially for a first foal,” said Cane Run’s Elizabeth Caldwell. “She has a good attitude and is level-headed, willing to do what you ask of her.”

Three others by Cantab Hall of note are HIP 248 Mr. Zuanetti, HIP 284 Justathiller, and HIP 294 Cold Truth.

Mr Zuanetti, consigned by Saga Farm as agent, is out of the Deweycheatumnhowe mare Danielle Hall, the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner for 2-year-old trotting fillies in 2014. Danielle Hall, who was also second to Mission Brief in the Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Filly Trot that same season, ended her career with $577,459 in the bank. Justathriller, selling from the Peninsula Farm (agent) consignment, is out of the Jailhouse Jesse mare Just Jess, who put away $346,249 and won the Indiana Sires Stakes Super Final for rookie trotting fillies in 2015, and Cold Truth, a Hunterton Sales Agency offering, is out of Lonely Lady, a full sister to Bar Hopping.

Moving on to Chapter Seven, he is the sire of HIP 162 Storybook Ending, consigned by Cameo Hills Farm. Storybook Ending is out of Causabon, a Kadabra half-sister to the stakes winner Tyson ($313,745), and the fourth dam produced Southwind Allaire and Ariane Du Haras. He also has HIP 212 Midwind Chapter coming from the Peninsula Farm (agent) consignment. Midwind Chapter’s dam Daylon Alibi is a half-sister to near $2 million earner Daylon Magician and to Daylon Miracle, who put $624,422 in the bank.

Crawford Farms will have Chapter Seven filly Prasiolite (HIP 226) on Tuesday, the initial offering out of Jewels In Hock. A Credit Winner mare, Jewels In Hock was the New York Sire Stakes champion at 3 and came back the next year to win two legs of the Miss Versatility Series to go with a third to Hannelore Hanover in the Fresh Yankee.

Nearing the end of the session, there are also HIPs 261 Le Cinq A Sept and 267 Bronx Zoo. Le Cinq A Sept, consigned by Preferred Equine Marketing Inc. as agent, is out of the Cantab Hall mare French Press and is from the family of Crazed, and Bronx Zoo, consigned by Concord Stud Farm, is out of Havanna Bar, a Muscle Massive mare. The third dam, Maple Frosting, produced both Chocolatier and Sugar Trader, and breeding Chapter Seven to a Muscle Massive mare is a cross that worked to produce Gimpanzee.

Speaking of Gimpanzee, one trotting yearling to watch during the second night that’s by a sire other than Cantab Hall or Chapter Seven is HIP 249 Danika. A Muscle Mass filly being sold by agent Preferred Equine Marketing Inc., Danika is out the Credit Winner mare Danish Girl, a half-sister to both Gimpanzee and recent New York Sire Stakes and Kentuckiana Stallion Management champion Iteration.

Switching over to pacers, first-crop sire Huntsville dominated the top sellers list at the recent Goshen Yearling Sale, and on Tuesday in Lexington he has the likes of HIP 136 Wine N Dine Me, the first offering out of $201,066 earner Wine Snob. Wine N Dine Me, selling from the Cameo Hills Farm consignment, is also from the family of last year’s New York Sire Stakes champion 2-year-old pacing filly The Fun Marshall. Cameo Hills also has HIP 239 Pop The Cork, the initial foal out of the Well Said mare Happy Hannah ($95,254). Pop The Cork’s third dam is the multiple award winner Galleria.

Crawford Farms also went to Huntsville with some of their talented mares, giving us HIP 221 Hunting Angels and HIP 265 Quarantini. Hunting Angels is out of the Rock N Roll Heaven mare Angels Rockn Pink ($229,654) and Quarantini’s dam is the Betterthancheddar mare All On Top Hanover ($61,913). All On Top Hanover only raced as a 2-year-old, but took a mark of 1:52 3/5 and won both in the Kindergarten Classic and the New York Sire Stakes.

“He’s the first and only foal from Angels Rockn Pink, who passed sadly foaling this year,” Michelle Crawford said of Hunting Angels. “One of my personal favorites, he is built a lot like his mom and shows major speed and athleticism in the paddock. I’m sure he will make us proud.

“(Quarantini) was named when the world shut down, and we decided to have some fun naming some of the yearlings. This spectacular individual’s dam showed major signs of greatness as a NYSS winner but unfortunately suffered a career-ending injury and entered the breeding shed. No doubt he has every opportunity to follow in her footsteps.”

Always B Miki also has a few to highlight, starting with HIP 175 One Of The Guys. Consigned by Preferred Equine Marketing Inc. as agent, One Of The Guys is out of Studio One, an Art Major mare who banked $72,995 and is a sister to the likes of Glowing Report and Must See, who is the dam of Well Said. HIP 184 Teen Dream, consigned by Vieux Carre’ Farms, is from this same family, being out of a daughter of Glowing Report named Teenybopper (by Somebeachsomewhere). Vieux Carre’ Farms will also sell HIP 205 Along Came Miki, a filly whose dam World Of Delight is a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to Worldly Beauty and to Worldly Treasure, the dam of Captaintreacherous.

A couple of other colts worth mentioning are HIP 150 War Winds, by Sweet Lou, and HIP 186 Danger Zone, by Captaintreacherous. War Winds, consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency as agent, is out of the stakes-winning Bettor’s Delight mare Queen To Me ($68,650), a half-sister to Western Terror and If I Can Dream, and Danger Zone, offered by agent Kentuckiana Farms, is out of Thatsoveryverynice ($163,689). Thatsoveryverynice was victorious in both Grand Circuit action and the Ontario Sires Stakes program as a 2-year-old, taking a quick mark of 1:51 2/5.

To round things out, one pacing filly of note is HIP 270 A Girl That Twirls, hailing from the Crawford Farms contingent. By American Ideal, she’s the first foal out of the stakes-winning Somebeachsomewhere mare Heels On The Beach ($207,902) and from the family of $1.28 million earner and Breeders Crown champion Armbro Amoretto.

“This filly paces when she walks and when she wants to show off,” remarked Michelle Crawford. ”Nice family and a very nice individual. It will be exciting to see her in the NYSS.”

These yearlings, and many others, will be available during the second night of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, which will see HIPs 135-316 go through the ring.
