Harness: Blue Chip Farms extols the virtues of year-round boarding

Blue Chip Farms is introducing a new plan to educate on the benefits of housing broodmares year-round at the breeding farm. Dubbed the Blue Chip Advantage, the program is meant to shed some light on the costs involved with broodmare ownership and offer benefits to those who choose Blue Chip for their mares.

According to farm owner Tom Grossman, a direct correlation can be made between the declining foal crop and mares residing off the grounds of a major breeding farm.

“Part of the reason for the foal crop crisis is absurdly low ‘in foal’ rates for people having mares at local boarding facilities without the same level of dedicated staff and equipment at a major farm. They come to Blue Chip and pick up semen in a box (and pay extra fees to us to do so) or have it shipped and the mare is either dirty or not timed right, resulting in the mare not getting into foal,” said Grossman. “While board rate seems low, by the time they pay local vet fees, semen pick up charges and most importantly more cycles bred or no pregnancy at all, they get frustrated and leave the business.”

With an expert staff and cutting-edge technology in place, Grossman feels that Blue Chip is uniquely positioned to provide better value to customers than they realize.

“Our push is to educate mare owners and potential owners,” said Grossman, who is offering special deals for year-round mares. “We are also further sweetening the deal this year by no longer charging insemination charges for new year-round boarders and multiple mare discounts.”
