Handle strong for Kentucky Downs opener

All-sources handle on the 10-race Thursday card at Kentucky Downs was $9,695,502, a track record for a weekday opening day. The single-day record of $20.8 million was set last year on the Kentucky Turf Cup card, a record that stands to be broken again next Saturday.

Law Professor emerged the winner of the $394,000 Tapit Stakes on Thursday, giving trainer Rob Atras a stakes winner with his first starter at Kentucky Downs. Atras told track publicity from his New York base: “It was incredible. I couldn’t believe it. I never expected to win first time at that track.”
Law Professor paid $21.10.
Trainer Mike Maker and jockey Tyler Gaffalione both racked up three wins apiece on Thursday, including two together, while Saffie Joseph Jr. and jockey Edgard Zayas also teamed together for a pair of wins. Trainer Wesley Ward also had two winners.
