DEL MAR, Calif. - Handle on all horse races in California rose by 3 percent in the first half of 2015, to $1,553,197,536, according to figures released by the California Horse Racing Board on Friday. Handle on daytime Thoroughbred programs at Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita, and the first part of the mixed-breed Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting at the Alameda County Fair, increased 2 percent. There was a 9 percent gain in harness and Quarter Horse racing conducted at night. In the first six months of the year, there were two fewer afternoons of Thoroughbred racing and one additional night program. On-track handle fell 3 percent, while account wagering within in California rose 5 percent. The biggest gain was in handle from out-of-state, which grew by nearly 5 percent, to $714,046,200. For the month of June, handle at all tracks was down slightly, .37 of a percent, from $243,296,224 in 2014 to $242,385,842 this year. Handle on daytime programs in June was down nearly 1 percent, from $219,930,047 to $217,882,805. Handle on harness races at Cal-Expo and Quarter Horse and lower-level Thoroughbred racing at Los Alamitos in June rose 5 percent, from $23,366,176 in 2014 to $24,503,037 this year. No resolution on 2016 dates At Friday’s meeting, the racing board postponed decision on racing dates on the Northern and Southern California Thoroughbred circuits for 2016 after racetracks and horsemen’s organizations said they have yet to reach resolutions. The issue is expected to be decided at the racing board’s next meeting, at Del Mar on Aug. 20. In Northern California, there have been several proposals submitted by the California Authority of Racing Fairs, Golden Gate Fields, the Sonoma County Fair, Cal-Expo State Fair, and by commissioner Steve Beneto. There is little agreement among the groups on potential schedules. Beneto, who chairs the racing board’s Northern California dates committee, said he wanted the parties to produce a schedule that gives the San Joaquin County Fair in Stockton two weeks of racing in June and provides no overlap during the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale in August. San Joaquin is running in September this year, even though officials from that fair want June dates in 2016. Part of Ferndale’s meeting is often held at the same time as racing at Golden Gate Fields. In Southern California, there are disagreements on whether to give Los Alamitos more than eight weeks of racing, a position that officials with Santa Anita and the Thoroughbred Owners of California opposed at Friday’s meeting. One option presented in recent weeks is to end the six-month marathon Santa Anita meetings in the third week of June, a week earlier than this year, and shift racing to Los Alamitos for three weeks before Del Mar. Los Alamitos held a two-week meeting earlier this summer. -
