Hammy stays unbeaten in Our Dear Peggy
Hammy closed with an impressively rally through the stretch to remain unbeaten after two starts in Friday’s $75,000 Our Dear Peggy Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on turf at Gulfstream Park.
Hammy, ridden by Marcos Meneses, rallied from last with a half-mile remaining. She paid $7.40 as the second choice in a field of 10. Hammy has earned $59,550.
Hammy’s win was much easier to predict than the upset by Super Sienna ($104) in the day’s final race, the $75,000 Cellars Shiraz Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
Hammy ran a mile on turf in 1:36.86, finishing 1 3/4 lengths clear of 13-1 Life’s Mystery, who closed from seventh in the final furlong. Sucker for Looks, the 5-2 favorite, closed from eighth on the first turn to finish third.
Hammy won a $25,000 claimer for maidens at a mile on turf by 2 1/2 lengths in her debut at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 26 for owners Starry Night Racing and trainer Kent Sweezy. Hammy is the first stakes winner for the stallion Scalding, who is by Nyquist. Scalding stands at Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky.
In a text message, Sweezy said that Hammy will be based at Gulfstream Park in coming months.
