Hammersly: Santa Anita pick four play for Sunday, Nov. 2

Michael Hammersly|Nov 01, 2014

One last swing at pick four riches as the Santa Anita meet closes and a chance for those licking their wounds from all the Breeders’ Cup activity to get something back.

Race 7

LAMAZONE (#5) may be a timely claim by sharp trainer Ron Ellis, who snatched her up for $20,000 off a nice maiden win. He brings her back without a tag attached and returns her to turf, a surface she handled well here in the spring. BOW TIE BELLE (#7) has been freshened since a game maiden win on Del Mar’s main track and, like Lamazone, handled turf well here in the spring. HUGH KNEW (#2) continues her solid form and has something the top two don’t – a win on turf. Q’ VIVA (#1) is a proven commodity coming off a smart rallying second in a turf sprint here. She may prefer the added ground in this spot.

MIA’S STORM (#4) rates a puncher’s chance at a price.

Race 8

LEMON DO ORO (#2) blew the start but finished strongly to be second in a race like this here Oct. 5. She’s sitting on a win. MISS SUPER QUICK (#11) has been freshened and drops after a fine stakes third Sept. 6 at Los Alamitos. GLOBAL HOTTIE (#1) may be the one to beat. After a win at Hollywood Park last Nov. 17, she was gone 10 months but came back firing to win Sept. 18 at Los Alamitos Sept. 18. MALIBU HONEY (#7) weakened a bit to be third routing at this level here Oct. 9, but the cutback to seven furlongs may be key.

Race 9

FILIMBI (#1) seemed on the path for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf this spring and summer. Things didn’t quite pan out, but a smart third in the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland last time shows her quality. WALL OF SOUND (#2) is a scary new face having done well in Europe before finishing a nice fourth in the Grade 1 E. P. Taylor at Woodbine last time out. I’M ALREADY SEXY (#6) was far from disgraced when sixth in the Grade 1 Beverly D. in August and bounced back to win easily in a stakes at Kentucky Downs. She has dangerous speed. STRATHNAVER (#4) is capable of big things when in the mood, and maybe cutting back to this distance will do the trick.

Race 10

KING PTOLEMY (#8) likely is capable of much better than his first two indicate. He’s worked well for this and figures a price. ALFA BIRD (#11) is no doubt the one to beat off two strong seconds to start his career. CAUTIOUS GIANT (#1) was third just a nose behind Alfa Bird here Oct. 11, and that was Cautious Giant’s first start in more than a year. LITTLE CURLIN (#5) showed talent here last winter while WEAPON OF WAR (#6) has been working wonderfully for this first run.
