Hammersly: Pick three play for Del Mar on Saturday, Nov. 8
Some price potential in a maiden turf route (race 6) and competitive fields in races 7 and 8 give some appeal to the pick three incorporating those races.
Race 6
SWEETER THANCANDY (#6) ran on smartly in her first turf try, which came down the hill Oct. 4 at Santa Anita. Yes, she was only fifth, but this daughter of top-class turfer Candy Ride was beaten just 1 3/4 lengths after a troubled start and being far back early. If anything, the added ground here helps. PAULINA’S LOVE (#4) is the proven commodity as she rallied well for second in her debut on turf at a mile Oct. 18 at Santa Anita.
C’MON SISTER (#5) took off blinkers and perked up to duel and finish a solid fourth in a strong hillside sprint Oct. 4 at Santa Anita. She already has handled this longer trip well.
CONQUEST ARTURA (#1) has worked well for her debut for a trainer who does quite well first time out (15 percent), and she’s bred for this, being by the Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller. SCANDAL (#3) didn’t do much in her Oct. 12 dirt debut at Santa Anita but can surely improve with that run under her belt. She cost a pretty penny ($240,000), and somebody saw something to like in her debut, as she was well backed (7-2).

Race 7
HONEY RIDE (#7) was last seen being pulled up in the Grade 2 Honeymoon on grass May 4 at Santa Anita but has had plenty of time off since and has worked splendidly for this return. Being by Candy Ride, she figures to enjoy this footing. GRAZENETTE (#9) was no factor last time out when eighth on turf Sept. 28 at Santa Anita, but her prior two came on this track, including a big win at this distance Aug. 20 and fine third in a sprint stakes (the Fleet Treat) July 26.
FLEET OF GOLD (#1) was a smart second on this track at this trip Aug. 2. She dueled and fizzled here Aug. 27 but rebounded to be a smart rallying second at this level Oct. 9 at Santa Anita.

HOME SCHOOL (#2) may be sitting on a win. The colt has been knocking on the door all year, and some of his best work came on this course at this trip (second Aug. 10 and third July 17 in the Oceanside).
NUMBER FIVE (#3) not only was game winning at this distance on the Santa Anita turf Oct. 16, but trainer Carl O’Callaghan saw fit to plunk down $50,000 to claim him. He may have bought at the right time. Oh, and this gelding won on this course at this trip July 30. AWESOME RETURN (#6) has fired nothing but bullets in six turf starts (3-1-2 record). He’s been freshened and has worked smartly for this. I’LL WRAP IT UP (#5) was a fine second in the Grade 3 La Jolla on this course Aug. 9, so you know he likes it here.
CABRAL (#7) is an interesting new face. He did plenty of good work in France and came to the U.S. for the Grade 3 Hill Prince on Oct. 4 at Belmont. He didn’t fare too well there, but the drop here helps, and he may prefer the firmer footing he’ll get here.
