Hammersly: Pick 3 play at Aqueduct for Sunday, Nov. 2

The quick turnaround by smashing recent winner Doubledown Again in race 8 may give you a linchpin for the day’s closing pick three, and bulky fields for the turf in races 7 and 9 give you a chance to find a price.

Race 7

THE TEA CUPS (#2) finished smartly to be third going a mile at this level at Belmont on Oct. 3, that after winning a smart New York-bred first-level allowance race at Saratoga on Aug. 29. She has a sharp work since and looks on edge. LUCKY NANCY E. (#4) has ample speed and is the one to catch. She has shown on occasion she can be freaky big.

RUN TO MAMA (#8) won a race like this at Belmont on Sept. 12. That earned her a stakes shot Oct. 18 and while that didn’t go too well the move back to this level may get her back on track. MIZ OWELL (#1) made a smart, threatening run into the lane before flattening out as the favorite. Her last win came on this course.

DOUBLEDOWN AGAIN (#3) looked like a new horse blasting rivals here Oct. 29. Not only did he win easily but trainer Michelle Nevin wheels him back in just four days, and she has had much success with this move (4 for 12, 33 percent, when coming back in a week or less).

PAZOLINI (#2) is certainly a danger after winning three straight, the first at Gulfstream and the last two at Belmont. He hasn’t been seen since June 7 but is proven off the bench. Remember, he cost $875K at auction so they certainly are expecting more than an allowance horse here. PASS THE DICE (#4) continues his solid form. Remember, last spring he was good enough to be second in a Grade 2 at Churchill so there’s quality here.

Race 9

Have to spread here with so many questions marks due to overall inexperience and unproven turf ability for most of these. JADAM (#5) showed turf talent when a fine third in her debut on Saratoga grass Aug. 28. She didn’t fare so well at Belmont on Oct. 1 in a race washed off the turf but if this stays on she has appeal. VIVA MALALA (#7) debuts for Christophe Clement, who of course is strong first out, with plenty of turf in her pedigree. JULES N ROME (#6) just missed when a sharp second in her debut in a race washed off the turf at Belmont on Oct. 1. Pedigree-wise there’s no reason she shouldn’t handle this footing. STOLEN VICTORY (#11) wasn’t disgraced when fifth in her first turf try at Belmont on Oct. 9. SUMMERSAULT (#12) handled turf well when fifth in his debut on the Saratoga turf Aug. 28 and returning to grass after running fifth in a race washed off the turf at Belmont on Oct. 1 may be a boon. SKY FORTUNE (#1) hit the brakes pretty hard in her first two starts but it’s nice to see no panicky drop from her connections. She’s bred for turf and with her speed and the rail draw she could be prominent a long time, at a big price.
