Hammersly: Del Mar pick three for Sunday, Nov. 30
Multirace wagers involving the Grade 1 Matriarch can lead to inflated payoffs if you can beat a heavy favorite, or if in a competitive field you can find the right port in which to dock. It’s the latter in this year’s renewal that may apply, as a few price options exist in the Matriarch and can thus bolster your pick three payoff.
Race 6
DADDY D T (#6) was quite respectable when rallying for third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last month, and a repeat of that wins this. Oh, he broke his maiden beating winners in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf on this course at this trip Sept. 3. CONQUEST TYPHOON (#10) has quality as well. He was a Canadian Grade 2 winner on turf this summer and was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, just a head behind DADDY D T. GUILTY (#3) invades from Ireland, where he showed ample turf talent.

Race 7
ROLLING FOG (#6) won his first two starts, both on this track, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, in 2012. He hasn’t been seen since, which is alarming, but has been working lights out for Baffert, who, of course, is strong off the bench. FEROCIOUS (#2) showed ample talent last winter and spring, including running third in the Grade 3 Laz Barrera at Santa Anita. He hasn’t run since that May 10 outing but has worked well, and trainer Ellis is strong off a long layoff like this. MY SLEW (#7) is a hard-knocking veteran who pretty much fires every time, while MIDNIGHT HAWK (#8) had a troubled start and gave way badly after a midrace move in a stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 31, his first start in six months. He can surely improve off that run and has worked well since. MR. SEXY (#9) is your potential bomb as he comes off a decent fourth in a stakes at Santa Anita last month.

Race 8
STRATHNAVER (#2) packs a wallop in the lane, and while she’s been effective going longer, a mile may be her best game. LEXIE LOU (#6) won the Grade 3 Autumn Miss at Santa Anita at this trip Oct. 25 and is certainly scary if she goes here (she also was entered to run against the boys in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on Saturday, facing the likes of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome). DISCREET MARQ (#5) was a strong second in this race last year at Hollywood Park, beaten just a nose, and she comes here sharp off a big win in a New York-bred stakes at Belmont on Oct. 18 to indicate that she’s still got the necessary ammo.
