Hammersly: Del Mar pick six play for Wednesday, July 29
With over a half a million just sitting there (and odds are some of that was yours to begin with) and the prospect of a lot more money piled on for Wednesday’s big carryover, there’s probably about a million and a half reasons to take a swing.

Race 3
SERBIAN SYCLONE (#1) can sizzle early and comes of a fine third in a turf sprint stakes at Golden Gate June 13. In fact, the winner of that race, Rock Me Baby, came here and was a sharp second in the California Dreamin’ Sunday. A bullet work on turf here July 23 (:48.40) says he’s ready. JIMMY BOUNCER (#2) has never run on turf, but he’s shown talent, as he’s unbeaten in three starts. Still, besides the footing change, he hasn’t been seen since last Oct. 31.

WISH I UNDERSTOOD (#11) is on the AE list but looks like a solid ‘A’ should she get to play. Her first two races, both this month, were smart, including a second for $50,000 on this track July 23, and she drops further in price here. RICH GIRL (#6) has shown talent and has been facing tougher. They tried turf, a route, and straight maidens last time at Santa Anita June 25, and she didn’t run badly to be fourth, but this is a better situation as she’s well down in class, back to dirt, and back to sprinting. (Should WISH I UNDERSTOOD not get into the race, move RICH GIRL into the ‘A’ slot.). GUSTO’S GAL (#1) has worked nicely for her debut for Hofmans, who isn’t one to really push down hard on his horses in the morning, so if a trainee of his works fast it likely did so on its own. Four of her 6 siblings to race are winners, including Web Gem (6 wins, $331K, G3 SP). TEQUILA MARY (#3) ran on well for second in her debut at Golden Gate May 30. She’s been freshened, races on dirt for the first time, and is up in price, but that was an encouraging debut and Desormeaux/Hess Jr. are a strong team (20 percent the past 19 months or so). TUMBLEWEEDPRINCESS (#9) was pulled up against straight maidens at Los Alamitos July 3, but she came back eight days later for $40,000 and was a solid second. She drops further for this.

LAND OVER SEA (#3) ran on well for second in her dirt debut at Los Alamitos July 12. She has a strong work since, too, and while she switches to turf, she’s kin to Draw Too (3 wins, all on turf, $219K). Her only other sibling is War Story (2 wins, $268K, two-time G2 SP, also G3 SP). GOOD LOOKING (#5) was no threat in her first two starts, but she’s eligible to improve, and it’s nice to see no panicky drop by Gallagher. She’s a full-sister to turf winner Kris Furillo. ASIAN MOONLADY (#4) gets Bejarano for her debut, which is encouraging. Her lone sibling to race, Moon Ride (2 wins, $27K) has one third from three turf starts. WARM ENDOWMENT (#7) was a decent second in her dirt debut at Los Alamitos July 2. She’s bred for turf as she’s by strong turf sire Unusual Heat and is a full-sister to grass winner Los Gatos.

BONUS SPIN (#3) hasn’t run in over nine months, but the filly showed talent on dirt, including a monster maiden win last June. That earned her a stakes shot for her first try against winners, though that proved a bit too much too soon. She’s been working steadily for Mullins, who is pushing all the right buttons early this meet. AWESOME LUCK (#5) looks headed the right way for Heap. She teamed with Bejarano at Santa Anita June 19, and the result was a game maiden win. Bejarano stays with her. LUCKY STUDENT (#1) had a strong spring at Santa Anita with a win and two seconds before being sidelined about six weeks. While she drops a notch in price, she remains in above the price they claimed her for April 25 ($16,000).

Race 7
SOUND CITY (#2) found optional claimers too tough in three straight at Santa Anita but then dropped in for $50K and was a sharp second at 20-1. She’s been freshened a bit, and this further drop may be just what the doctor ordered. KYANKES (#3) was sharp at Santa Anita this winter/spring with a win, a second, and win in three starts. She then found optional claimers too tough at Los Alamitos last time but gets a prudent drop. It’s her first time on turf, but she’s bred for it. She’s also reunited with Bejarano, who was up for that aforementioned trio of good Santa Anita work. BACKSTREET LISA (#10) is on the AE list, but if she gets to play, she can be dangerous. She has the speed to flee what would be an outside post, and note despite dueling she finished not far behind SOUND CITY in their June 12 match-up. LOOKIN FOR MONEY (#5) was the one who dueled with ‘LISA in that June 12 race. She faded, though, to fourth as the 4-5 favorite after the duel. She doesn’t really want to run that way, and a return to stalking tactics can help her bounce back.

Race 8
SHAKAHARI (#1) has been knocking on the door the past few months with a string of good efforts. He comes off a solid third at Los Alamitos July 9, and the winner, Newfound Gold, came right back to win here last weekend. The drop may be key. GEORGE’S MAIN MAN (#2) has won two of his last three and Puype gives him an encouraging value hike. He also goes from N2L to N3L company, but that doesn’t necessarily make this spot that much tougher. Four works since that June 20 win say he’s doing well. JIMMY’S DATE (#10) returns from New Mexico, where he did plenty of good work. He was sharp on this synthetic main track a year ago, and if anything, may be better on dirt. He’s worked well for his first start in a few months.
