Hamelback named CEO of National HBPA
Eric Hamelback, the former general manager of Adena Springs in Kentucky, has been hired to be the chief executive of the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, the organization announced on Monday.
Hamelback will succeed Phil Hanrahan, who retired this year. Hamelback’s first day on the job is today, the organization said. The National HBPA is based in Lexington, Ky.
Hamelback, a graduate of Louisiana State University who had early in his career worked for an equine veterinary practice, was employed by Adena Springs, owned by Frank Stronach, from 1997 until last fall, when he was replaced as general manager by Eoin Ryan. He started as yearling manager at the Kentucky operation and was named general manager of the Kentucky property in 2008.
“Accepting the position as CEO of the National HBPA is an honor,” Hamelback said in a release. “To be part of an organization that has its primary focus being the health and welfare of the equine athlete, along with that of protecting horsemen’s interests, epitomizes what I have strived for in my professional career.”
The National HBPA represents horsemen’s interests in several large industry efforts, including at the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, which develops recommendations on the industry’s medication policies. The organization has 30 affiliated groups in states, provinces, and at racetracks in North America.
