Gypsy Eyes sharp for Cellars Shiraz

The $75,000 Cellars Shiraz is the gem of two one-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds that share the spotlight at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday. The 14-horse Cellars Shiraz, for fillies, anchors the 10-race card that begins at noon Eastern.
The $75,000 Showing Up drew seven colts and geldings and goes as the third race.
Gypsy Eyes will be among the favorites in the Cellars Shiraz. The Irish-bred daughter of High Chaparral was coming off a layoff when she ran a huge race at Gulfstream Park in her first North America start for trainer Patrick Biancone. After breaking sharply in the one-mile, first-level allowance on turf for fillies and mares, she set an honest pace on her way to a 2 1/4-length victory over Deedeezee.
She was coming off a runner-up finish going the same distance in a $25,900 handicap at Ascot on July 9. In her previous race at Ascot, she didn’t make an impact in a $112,900 handicap June 15. The winner, Persuasive, finished second to Alice Springs in a Group 1 at Leopardstown in her next start. At 4-1, Alice Springs is among the favorites to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Gypsy Eyes will break from post 3 with apprentice Lane Luzzi aboard.
Temple Fur is coming off a win going 7 1/2 furlongs on turf in the $75,000 Betsy Ross at Gulfstream on July 4 and may have tipped her hand when she worked five furlongs in a snappy 57.80 seconds at Gulfstream on Oct. 28.
Trained by Jessica Campbell, Temple Fur is versatile and capable of stalking what should be an honest pace. Prior to her win in the Betsy Ross, she set the pace before settling for second going 1 1/16 miles in the $75,000 Christmas Past at Gulfstream on June 11.
The well-traveled Princess Princess is coming off a runner-up finish behind Mo Knows in a one-mile, second-level allowance on turf at Keeneland on Oct. 14 for trainer Ben Colebrook. The daughter of Discreet Cat has made nine starts at seven different tracks this year, with her only win coming over a sloppy track in a first-level allowance at Churchill Downs on May 21.
The last time she ran in Florida, she finished fourth in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay on March 12.
◗ Keystoneforvictory, trained by Mike Maker, looks like the one to beat in the Showing Up. Prior to going unplaced in the Grade 3 Kent at Delaware on July 16, he won the $75,000 Forty Niner at Gulfstream on June 18. Sent off as the even-money favorite, he took them all the way in the 1 1/16-mile turf race.
Full Salute won’t mind being back on turf after going unplaced in the Grade 3 Jersey Shore at Monmouth on July 23 and the Grade 3 Gallant Bob at Parx Racing on Sept. 24. Trained by Edward Plesa, he went into the Jersey Shore off a win going 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in the $58,000 Select at Monmouth on June 12.
◗ A Gulfstream Park press release announced that Phil Saltzman died in south Florida. He was 79.
Saltzman was the announcer at Calder from 1985 to 2014. He also filled in calling races at Hialeah Park and Gulfstream. He was known for his phrase, “And they’re not going to get him today.”
He is survived by two daughters, Nancy and Leisa; two granddaughters, Livia and Grace; and wife Linda.
A service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Levitt Weinstein at 18840 W. Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach.
