Gutaifan extends winning streak in Prix Robert Papin
Gutaifan extended his winning streak to three races with a victory in Sunday’s $143,000 Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse, one of the first major stakes of the year for 2-year-olds in France.
The field of eight was dominated by shippers from England.
Gutaifan (6-1) was ridden by Frankie Dettori for English trainer Richard Hannon. The Irish-bred colt by Dark Angel fought for the lead from the start of the race at 5 1/2 furlongs and won by a head over Ajaya, trained in England by William Haggas.
Areen, second in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June for trainer Kevin Ryan, gave England a sweep of the first three positions.
Venecia Style, a 9-5 favorite and one of three fillies in the field, could only finish fourth in her first loss in four starts.
Gutaifan, who races for Al Shaqab Racing, has won three of four starts, including a maiden race at Salisbury, England, on June 14 and a conditions race at Chester, England, on July 10.
Guiliani wins Bayerisches-Zuchtrennen Stakes
Guiliani, a 4-year-old colt by the Miswaki stallion Tertullian, scored the biggest win of his career in Sunday’s $170,000 Bayerisches-Zuchtrennen Stakes, a Group 1 at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Munich, Germany.
Ridden by Filip Minarik for trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho, Guiliani (11-2) closed from just off the pace in a field of nine to win by a half-length over 17-1 Ajalo. Wunder finished third, a head in front of 9-5 favorite Lucky Lion. Magic Artist, fifth in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on June 6, finished fifth.
Guiliani was a minor stakes winner in France last year and in Germany earlier this year. He was second and third in group stakes in Germany in advance of Sunday’s race.
