Gustav Klimt the tepid choice in Prix Jean Prat

Steve Andersen|Jul 06, 2018

Gustav Klimt has a final chance to win a Group 1 race for 3-year-old milers in Europe in Sunday’s $469,680 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, France.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore partnership, Gustav Klimt was sixth in the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 5, third in the Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh on May 26, and third in the St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19. Those were all Group 1 races at a mile for 3-year-olds.

In the Prix Jean Prat, restricted to 3-year-old colts and fillies, Gustav Klimt is expected to be a slight favorite over top French miler Olmedo, who won the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp on May 13 and was 13th in the French Derby at 1 5/16 miles on June 3 in his last start.

Ryan Moore rides Gustav Klimt, while Cristian Demuro rides Olmedo for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.

Gustav Klimt, by Galileo, has won 3 of 7 starts. At 2, he won the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at six furlongs at Newmarket last July in his final start of the season.

Wusool, who won the Group 3 Prix Paul de Moussac at a mile on June 17, is rated as a contender in the Prix Jean Prat in his Group 1 debut for trainer Francois Rohaut.

Europe’s richest race on Sunday is the Group 1 German Derby at Hamburg, which is worth $763,203 and run at 1 1/2 miles on turf. Royal Youmzain, the winner of two Group 3 races at 1 1/4 miles on turf in the spring, will be favored over Weltstar, who won the Group 2 Oppenheim Union Rennen at 1 3/8 miles on turf June 17, a key prep for the German Derby.
