Gunnevera to miss Whitney with bruised foot

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Antonio Sano reported Friday he will be forced to bypass the Grade 1 Whitney with Gunnevera after missing some training time due to a bruised foot.
Gunnevera has not started since his third-place finish in the Dubai World Cup, nor has he recorded an official workout since going five furlongs in 1:03.40 on June 15 at Gulfstream Park West.

“I had to give him a little break due to a bruising in one of his hind feet, but he is scheduled to work again tomorrow,” Sano said by phone from South Florida. “But there is no way after missing some training that we will be able to make the Whitney.”
Sano said if all goes well, the Grade 1 Woodward could be his next major goal here Sept. 1. Gunnevera finished second behind Yoshida in the 2018 Woodward.
