HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Donut God, winner of the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in his most recent start, will scratch from Saturday’s $165,000 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park, making the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds even more of a showdown between sharp debut winners Gunmetal and Grayscale.  Gunmetal, a son of Gun Runner trained Brad Cox, outdueled the heavily bet first-time starter Prime Power by 1 1/4 lengths in a quickly run six furlongs in 1:09.95 on Dec. 26 at Fair Grounds. It was 7 1/4 lengths back to the rest of the field. Gunmetal earned an eye-catching 96 Beyer Speed Figure.  “Physically, he looks amazing,” Cox said. ‘We think he’s a very fast horse. I think he showed that on debut. Thought he drew well [post 6] in this group. This is a big step up, I think if he can repeat his first race he’s going to be in the mix and be there at the end.”  :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! Cox said he might have considered Saturday’s Holy Bull at 1 1/16 miles for Gunmetal had he not been pointing impressive debut winner Tappan Street to that race.  Luis Saez rides Gunmetal.  Greyscale, despite breaking slowly, sped his way to the lead and recorded a 4 1/2-length victory on Nov. 16 at Gulfstream, where he ran six furlongs in 1:11.42 and earned an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said he missed one gate work going into that race.  “We had only one gate work. I was very skeptical of how he would break. He didn’t break well, he broke kind of weird but was able to recover very quickly,” Joseph said. “He should improve from his first race.”  Donut God, a son of Into Mischief who won his first two starts, would likely have vied for favoritism in the Swale. On Friday, trainer Brian Lynch said Donut God had a virus and will be forced to miss the race.  Macho Music, drawn on the rail, adds speed to the group. He broke awkwardly while finishing fourth in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes here on Jan. 4. Trainer Rohan Crichton is adding blinkers to the colt’s equipment Saturday.  Maitre D was a 26-1 debut winner at Turfway Park for trainer Doug O’Neill on Dec. 28. Fire Pit has won twice from seven starts. Gate to Wire will be making his dirt debut after three races on turf and one over Gulfstream’s Tapeta surface.  :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. River Thames on short rest The 3-year-old River Thames, a sharp 4 3/4-length winner of a six-furlong maiden race here Jan. 11, wheels back in three weeks to take on winners in a first-level allowance/optional $75,000 claimer going a mile. The race goes as the seventh on the 12-race program. Trainer Todd Pletcher said running River Thames back so quickly is not ideal but “figured this was our best option to hopefully get on course to put him in a position to run in a significant [Kentucky Derby] prep if he proves good enough,” Pletcher said. On debut, River Thames stalked two speeds while racing three to four wide, took over in upper stretch, and drew clear under John Velazquez. He ran six furlongs in 1:10.27 and earned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure. “He trained impressively like he would run well in his debut,” Pletcher said of the son of Maclean’s Music owned by WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, and Siena Farm. “He put himself in a good spot, stalking a highly regarded horse, finished up strongly. His energy level’s been good, his appetite’s been good.” Souper Times, a son of Not This Time, won his debut going a mile on turf for trainer Mark Casse. Tux won his debut going 6 1/2 furlongs at Aqueduct before finishing third, three lengths behind Poster, in the Grade 2 Remsen at 1 1/8 miles. Conquering Cat hasn’t been out since a fifth in the Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs on June 30. Rolando has been quick in his first three starts, all at seven furlongs. Indecisiveness ran twice in three weeks in November and now returns from a break with trainer Ruben Sierra removing blinkers and adding Lasix. Lou, in between chasing the unbeaten Rated by Merit in two divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes, won a first-level allowance race on Nov. 9 and is the only one in here being offered for the $75,000 claiming tag. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
