Gun Society up in time to take South Ocean Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Gun Society ran down the stakes-winning sprinter Owlette to notch her first stakes under Kazushi Kimura in Saturday’s $100,000 South Ocean at Woodbine.
Gun Society trailed early in her first non-turf start, as 2-5 favorite Owlette set sizzling fractions in the 1 1/16-mile route for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies.
Gun Society began to make up good ground on the backstretch, and then wore down a stubborn Owlette in the stretch to score by a half-length in a time of 1:45.34.
November Fog finished another four lengths back in third, and was followed by Bambarra Bay, She’s a Dream, and Wake Up Maggie.
Coming off a victory in an open maiden special route on the inner turf, Kimura said he had no concerns about Gun Society making her first start on the Tapeta.
“In the morning on Tapeta, the filly goes so nice,” Kimura. “That’s why she doesn’t care [about the surface]. She can run over the Tapeta. She’s such a nice horse.”
Gun Society paid $16.10, and banked $60,000 for owner-trainer-breeder Roger Attfield, who trained her sire, Society’s Chairman.
There was no show wagering.
