Gulfstream's Sunshine Millions Preview Day to replace Florida Million at Calder

Mike Welsch|Sep 19, 2013

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park has added the Sunshine Millions Preview Day on Nov. 9 to the stakes schedule for the current summer-fall meeting, which runs through Nov. 30. The Preview Day card, which will comprise eight stakes for Florida-breds worth a total of $1 million in purses, will serve as a prep for the $1.3 million Sunshine Millions, to be held at Gulfstream on Jan. 18.

The Sunshine Millions Preview will replace Calder’s Florida Million Day card, which was also scheduled for Nov. 9. The Sunshine Millions Preview is the second event traditionally run at Calder that has been transferred to Gulfstream, coming on the heels of the announcement that Gulfstream Park will become the new home of the Florida Sire Stakes – formerly the Florida Stallion Stakes – beginning in 2014.

The Preview Day card will feature the $150,000 Classic Millions Preview along with its filly counterpart, the $150,000 Distaff Preview, with both races to be decided at 1 1/16 miles.

The other six stakes on the card are the $125,000 Millions Turf Preview and the $125,000 Filly and Mare Turf Preview, both at a 1 1/16 miles; the $125,000 Juvenile Sprint and $125,000 Juvenile Filly Sprint, both at 6 1/2 furlongs; and the $100,000 Juvenile Turf and $100,000 Juvenile Turf Fillies, both at one mile.

According to Calder racing secretary Mike Anifantis, some of the purse money from the Florida Million will be applied to five $50,000 stakes races that have been added to the Tropical-at-Calder schedule. They are: the Kaiser Handicap for 3-year-olds and up going five furlongs on the turf Oct. 26; the Bold World for fillies and mares at six furlongs and the Capano for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf on Nov. 2; and the Excellent Luck for 2-year-olds and the Cut the Charm for 2-year-old fillies, both at 5 1/2 furlongs, on Nov. 16.
