Gulfstream Park West receives good response to new wagers
MIAMI – Gulfstream management has hit a home run with its innovative rolling super high five wager that began on opening day of the Gulfstream Park West meeting. The super high five requires bettors to select the first five finishers of a race in exact order. If nobody correctly selects the first five finishers, the majority of the pool carries over to the next event. The carryovers continue, race to race, throughout the card.
The rolling super high five has already resulted in some very large pools since its inception, peaking on Saturday in the finale, where bettors wagered $231,341 in quest of a $58,528 carryover that had built up over the previous four races. The winning combination in Saturday’s nightcap returned $127,569 for a 50-cent wager.
The rolling super high five is one of three bets being offered at Gulfstream Park West for the first time this season, along with an early pick five and a $5 quinella on the last race each afternoon.
“The bettors’ response to the early pick five and rolling super high five has been very positive,” said P.J. Campo, vice president of racing for The Stronach Group. “We will continue monitoring the new wagers throughout the meet to see what works and what doesn’t.”
