Gulfstream Park: McPeek works some of his best stock
Trainer Ken McPeek had a very busy Saturday morning when sending out a handful of his stable stars for serious work.
Four-year-olds War Dancer and Frac Daddy breezed in company, finishing five furlongs in 59.20 seconds after going neck-and-neck throughout.
“I thought they went really nice,” said McPeek. “There are a couple of allowance races in the book for them, but I’m thinking we might be heading for more ambitious spots with both.”
War Dancer is a Grade 2 winner on turf, while Frac Daddy is multiple-graded-placed while competitive on a variety of surfaces.
Another top older McPeek horse, Golden Ticket, breezed in company with Olympic Thunder, going a half-mile in 46.80. McPeek said Golden Ticket “went super” and goes next in the Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Handicap, a one-mile race March 8.
Rosalind, a Kentucky Oaks prospect after her close-up third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, went five furlongs in 59.80.
“We’re between the Rachel Alexandra and Davona Dale or maybe even a couple other spots with her,” said McPeek. “The good news is she’s really training well.”
Romans works Medal Count
Medal Count sharpened for his upcoming engagement in the Feb. 22 Fountain of Youth Stakes when breezing a half-mile Saturday in 100.20, according to Daily Racing Form.
Trainer Dale Romans took a pass on the Sam Davis at Tampa Bay Downs last weekend in favor of waiting for the Fountain of Youth with Medal Count. Owned by Spendthrift Farm, the Dynaformer colt is coming off a dead-heat victory in a Jan. 12 allowance on the Gulfstream turf.
