Gulfstream Park horses to watch: Week of March 1
Somewherebeautiful
Trainer: Jamie Ness
Last race: Feb. 21, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 3 1/4
Beyer: 55
Debuting in a maiden $25,000 claimer, this filly ran well, contesting the pace before tiring late to lose to by 3 1/4 lengths. She was encouragingly claimed out of the race by trainer Jamie Ness for the high-percentage Midwest Thoroughbreds outfit and appears to have upside.
Little Michelle
Trainer: Carlo Vaccarezza
Last race: Feb. 21, 10th
Finish: 1st by 1 3/4
Beyer: 70
A $2,000 yearling, this filly didn’t run like such a cheap horse in her debut, overcoming a poor start to rally from eighth and win going away in a five-furlong turf sprint. Given the short distance of such a race, that is not easily accomplished. She’s bred to stretch out and should prove an immediate factor against winners.
Undrafted
Trainer: Wesley Ward
Last race: Feb. 20, 8th
Finish: 3rd by 4
Beyer: 91
Making his first start since last summer, he finished an even third in a six-furlong dirt sprint that was extremely quick. He’s likely to move forward when returned to turf, a surface for which he showed an affinity at Churchill Downs last year. He’s probably best at a mile.
