Gulfstream Park horses to watch: Week of Jan. 25
Camryn’s Gem
Trainer: Bill Mott
Last race: Jan. 18, 11th
Finish: 2nd by 3
Beyer: 63
Was steadied sharply when running up on heels into the first turn; this forced her very wide and cost her valuable position. She then advanced prematurely down the backstretch to go from ninth to third, took command in early stretch, but paid a toll late to tire to second.
Scorpion Al
Trainer: Juan Rizo
Last race: Jan. 17, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 59
Accustomed to racing on or near the lead, this one broke poorly and was carried very wide into the first turn in a 7 1/2-furlong contest; he held on well before being caught late and likely can graduate against maiden $20,000 company with a better draw and start.
Kaigun
Trainer: Mark Casse
Last race: Jan. 17, 4th
Finish: 4th by 6
Beyer: 82
Racing on dirt for the first time after competing on turf and Polytrack, this one did not run to his potential and managed only to run a well-beaten fourth; expect a much better performance when this horse is returned to the grass in a second-level allowance.
