Gulfstream Park horses to watch: Week of Jan. 18
Smooth Daddy
Trainer: Tom Albertrani
Last race: Jan. 11, 6th
Finish: 4th by 3
Beyer: 75
Making his first start of the winter, this colt was compromised by drawing post 11 in a field of 12. Never able to get tucked in, he raced widest of all – roughly four wide around both turns – and did well to only finish three lengths back in a talent-laden maiden race.
United Stakes Won
Trainer: Mike Trombetta
Last race: Jan. 11, 11th
Finish: 2nd by neck
Beyer: 81
Stretched out to a route after sprinting on turf for the first five races of his career, he was hung out wide in a stalking position, took the lead, and was just caught late. He figures to benefit from that race and looks ready to clear the first-level allowance hurdle next out with a better trip.
Iffraaj Pink
Trainer: Graham Motion
Last race: Jan. 12, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 65
Broke slowly in her U.S. bow, as many European imports do, and rallied from 10 lengths back to narrowly miss. She was able to sit closer to the leaders in her races overseas and with a clean start likely will prove tough to beat next out.
