STEVEN CRIST: Gulfstream pick five ticket and live blog >>

Pick 5 Analysis
By Byron King

Buoyed by three challenging graded stakes, contention runs deep in Saturday's 50-cent pick-five at Gulfstream Park, setting the stage for a rewarding payoff. Here's a quick look at my ticket and strategy.

Starting with the seventh race, horseplayers are advised to go deep in what looks like a evenly matched field on the grass. I'll use my top three selections Guys Reward (#9), Rogue Victory (#8), Nordic Truce (#3), and throw in yet another, Reb (#11), a candidate to improve in his second start off a layoff.

Next up in the Davona Dale, I'll use two fillies, top selection Oh Carole (#4), who is unbeaten in two starts, and stakes-winning Dancinginherdreams (#9).

Some might elect to single dominant maiden winner Travelin Man (#3) in the next leg, the Hutcheson, but having made just one start and leaping into graded company, I felt the need to use two others, too, taking the battle tested Black N Beauty (#8) and Manicero (#9).

To Honor and Serve (#7), a leading Derby prospect, makes his seasonal bow next in the Fountain of Youth. He stands out on class, but being unraced this year and potentially a race or two away from his best, I'll include two others on my tickets: recent allowance winner Shackleford (#8) and Holy Bull third-place finisher Gourmet Dinner (#2).

Maiden claimers racing on the turf in the nightcap present a handicapping challenge, too. I'll take maiden special weight dropper Foolish Tiger (#8); Dax (#7), a wide third against similar Jan. 16; and Best Act (#1), a first-time turfer who worked a sharp five-eighths on the grass at Palm Meadows Feb. 16. In program number order, a 50-cent pick-five wager of the horses outlined above looks like this:

50-cent pick five:
3,8,9,11 with 4,9 with 3,8,9 with 2,7,8 with 1,7,8.
Ticket cost is $108.
