Gulfstream Park: Fallen rider leads to no-contest

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Jockey Edgar Prado badly bruised his right shoulder after falling from his mount Go Go Romeo during Sunday’s 10th race. The stewards called the race a no-contest and had the riders pull their horses up prior to the finish line as a safety precaution, with Prado still laying on the course near the clubhouse turn.

Because the race was declared a no-contest, all wagers were refunded, and consolation payoffs were made for the daily double and pick three. In all, more than $1 million in handle was returned as a result of the incident. In addition, due to the no-contest ruling, Sunday’s Rainbow 6 pool was paid off to those with the winners of the other five races. The 7-1-5-3-all-1 combination returned $17,858.18.
The original Rainbow 6 jackpot of $3,325,154 that was carried over to Sunday’s program will now be carried over to Wednesday.

“The safety of our riders and horses has to come first,” said Tim Ritvo, Gulfstream Park president. “When the outrider got to the jockey, the jockey wasn’t moving, and the outrider immediately called the stewards. The stewards only had a few seconds to react. It’s unfortunate what happened, but we will not take any chances when it comes to the life of a rider or horse.”
