Gulfstream: DRF Plus Handicapping Report for January 4, 2014

Vulnerable FavoriteThe layoff and not-so-subtle drop seem to spell trouble for a 7yo who has never been big on winning races anyway. Romans does win his share with this kind, but hard to see DE PRICE (#1, 5-2) running an ‘A’ race to win this lower-level beaten claimer, especially from the tricky one-hole. His career penchant for sharing-without-winning almost demands that you use him “under” in the verticals but avoid him in the top slot on all plays. – Marty McGee Closer Looks >> |

Spot PlayPOSITIVELY (#8, 3-1) Just when you thought he was going to be a perennial bridesmaid, this colt broke through with a thoroughly professional 1x score in his CD farewell and now returns 6 weeks later ready to do more on the requisite raise. Should have no excuses when getting a perfect stalking trip from the outer with Lanerie at the controls; figures to take the measure of the 8-5 fave, Jamaican Smoke, a mare facing boys following an 8-month layoff. – Marty McGee

Spot PlaySIDE STREET (#6, 8-1) Dark bay Street Sense filly is coming along nicely after a better-than-looked debut at CD in September, running second as the fave in a small Crc stakes after being given sufficient time between races by underrated conditioner. Might well have her mitts full with a couple of these others, but the price should be fair, and the outer post can afford Castanon a comfy stalk-and-see trip as she sits on what might well be a life’s-best effort. – Marty McGee

Spot PlayPOETIC KID (#8, 10-1) – has won four straight, many by open lengths, but will be dismissed in the Marshua’s River with the hike into graded stakes company; perhaps capable of an upset, riding sky-high confidence. – Byron King
