Gulfstream: Closer Looks for January 31, 2014

DRF Staff|Jan 30, 2014

Race 1

Pure Luxury
Back sprinting; that's probably a good thing; that 1/19 drill screams off the canvas; he has enough speed to maintain contact from the get go but still needs a rebound run.
He's Got Talent
Only one off effort and it was in the career tough spot on the wrong surface; show horse in last cashed next out in a $16K seller; Ward has been firing with everything except the kitchen sink; repeat well within the realm.
Cee 'n O
Colt hooked clear winner in the Graded effort was hung wide two back in the double live event; place horse in last took a $100K stakes here with a 92 Beyer on Jan. 1; would expect this guy to be the speed component of the Romans; will at least muddle the pace.
Ta Bueno
Four clear the last time in town, got the confidence builder in last; could need experience vs. winners and we really don't know how much the last taxing effort may have taken out of him.
Right On Course
Hard to be thrilled about the local efforts; protected in the last pair, and you can never dismiss this kind of speed; last angle to think about: this rider is 5 for 13 for this barn this meet.
Chilean Brothers
The recent miler may have helped the stamina; note he had the lead at the top of the lane in the 11/10 effort; toss the MSW races and the form looks better; don't sell too short.
Hearty Congrats
Goes from one sharp barn to another and may have hated the slop being kicked in his face last time; the August to October layoff really helped him mature; show horse in maiden breaker graduated and then was third in a $16K claimer; the blood is there for runner to have decent career as kin to double stakes winner and near $350K earner Imperial Czar.-Brian Mulligan

Race 4

Talk Show Talent
Beginner was sired by Talent Search who won 6 of 15 starts and 603K (his progeny have scored in 3 of 15 debuts); the dam involved won 5 of 27 attempts and 25K; winning siblings include 15K earner Prochetto.
Discreet Place
Has a proven first gear but found himself in an immediate duel in that second try; his sire won a G1 stakes and 1.69 million; the dam won 1 of 9 attempts and 28K; among the winning sibs is 45K earner Ghost Hill; respect.
Sea Zar Run
Maintained the place in game fashion a month ago when facing a similar grade; must somehow avoid an early confrontation with Discreet Place today in order to have a realistic chance; difficult call as a result.
Earthly Delights
Respectable showing at Tampa earlier this month and he could find himself ideally positioned today if the runners to his left engage in a major pace battle; should be a threat against this lower level.
Gangnam Camp (KOR)
No firepower shown up to known with no known excuses; his sire won a G2 stakes and 339K while the dam never raced; this is here only foal to make it to the starting gate; cannot endorse at this time.
Kid Pichongo
Raced only once since July and he came up empty; gets in very light for this return engagement and the latest breeze from the gate did show improvement; unlikely to clear the inside pure pacesetters though and therefore seems in deep.
Gavel Down
Yet to hit the board, he did show much more in the way of prompting speed in the last effort at Calder; ran into a very strong group in his debut race here last summer and will fly under the betting radar here; may be worth a saver.
Tartanero
Unlucky gelding was in a 3-way tussle for the lead last time and faded late to fourth; unless there is more than one key late scratch today, he may have a tough time established any type of early advantage; will have to resort to rating tactics.
Supreme Privilege
Fair first try when losing much ground; blinker addition today can help him focus and return dividends for the new connections; the colt's sire won a couple of G2s and 626K; the dam was zero for 10; there are no winning sibs to report.-Jim Kachulis

Race 5

Lebron (IRE)
He has a nice pedigree for turf, and maybe there's something to be said for him bringing his talent to Gulfstream Park, but he must improve over what he's shown in his first three starts in America to get the job done; runner up from latest won next out at Crc on 1/26 going 5f over turf vs. 16k OPC's with a 70 Beyer.
Starship Avenger
All of his starts routing over turf have been in the neighborhood of what it will take to get the job done in this spot and it looks like he's going to have every opportunity to manage a comfortable trip after breaking from a favorable inside post; he has the look of a top contender against this group of 25k N2L claiming rivals.
Rakete
Don't like to see his 1-for-15 race record, or that he hasn't finished 1-2 from eight turf starts, and can't ignore that he's making his first start away from Ramsey and Maker after being claimed for 16k; prefer to look in another direction.
Top Excitement
If this race has to be moved to the main track, he'll have the look of a top contender, but his total lack of early speed is a major concern, especially if some of the early speed scratches out; don't care to see how quiet this barn has been at this meeting.
Face the Race
He ran well after taking some time off two starts ago in a race that produced a couple of next-out winners, but it is of some concern to see that he regressed in his frist start after a claim in his latest outing; he's clearly a threat on a top try, just wondering if that can be expected at this point.
Goodtolook
He's been wildly inconsistent but his one start over turf was one of his sharper performances and he's likely going to employ his early speed to take it right at this field from the bell; this barn has been putting live horses on the track at this meeting.
Love Doctor Bill
He was a sharp winner in his career debut after attracting wagering support, and that was the only time that he's raced over turf; runner up from latest won next out at CD on 11/7 going 1m vs. 7.5k N3L claimers with a 70 Beyer.
Marine
His career best Beyer Speed Figure was earned in his most recent turf attempt and that was only the second time that he raced over turf; runner up from latest won next out at Crc on 5/23 going 7f vs. 16k OPC's with an 85 Beyer.
Dreamalot
Bernardini hasn't been a positive influence as a turf sire and this gelding found it to be much more difficult in his first start against winners in his latest outing after making it look pretty easy in beating a field of 25k MCL's two starts back.
Tubal
Minor stakes placed colt hasn't performed badly in his nine turf starts, but it looks like he's going to need to improve along the Beyer Speed Figure scale to get the better of this bunch; winner from latest won next out at Pen on 1/23 going 6f vs. N1X alw. rivals with an 84 Beyer.-Brian Pochman

Race 6

Upswell
Sire is 78-for-601 with 1st-turf starters; is out of a 5-0-1-2 grass dam (15K); her only foal to race on turf is 2-0-0-0 Rich City Dude; the 4th and 5th-place finishers from last posted 84-76 Beyer speed figures in next-out BEL-CD-MSW wins.
Rontos' Dream
Cuts back to his shortest-distance test ever after being outfinished at longer; best Beyer was going much longer on wet turf; the 2-back runner-up finisher Beyered 60 in his next-out GP-20K-maiden-claiming win while the show and 5th-place finishers graduated next out with 67-60 Beyers; the 3-back winner and show finisher Beyered 81-65 in their next-out KEE-allowance-PID-MSW wins.
Gerry With a G
Last time racing at 5F on the grass represents a career-best Beyer; was primed for this at longer when defeated by the show finisher who Beyered 66 in his next-out TAM-20K-maiden-claiming win; trainer wins with just 5% among turf sprinters since 2013.
Don't Look Back
Best Beyer posted on a less-than-firm turf course; needed last start off the August layoff but stamina has been the biggest drawback and has Drama Coach to catch today; removed Lasix for latest on dirt which did not help his form; view as a pace presence for part.
Lofty Heart
Favored in his return to turf for latest where he showed little late after stalking the pace from the gate; his debut race back in 2012 was a sharp effort when defeating the show finisher who Beyered 73 in his next-out GP-35K-maiden-claiming win.
Drama Coach
Speedster cuts back to 5F which helps the cause; new rider wins 31% for the trainer at GP; his 2-back show finish is a field-best Beyer speed figure; long layoff for a high-percentage fresh trainer; defeated the 4th, 7th and 8th-place finishers from last; they Beyered 78-67-45 in next-out PRM-MSW and EVD-10K-maiden-claiming wins; tough to catch if ready.
Rock Idol
4 straight last-place finishes to begin career; the latest loss was in a key race; the runner-up, show and 5th-place finishers from last Beyered 67-60-60 in next-out GP-CRC-25K-20K-16K-maiden-claiming wins; would be a shocker.
Duke of Langfuhr
Sire is 56-for-637 with 1st-turf starters; is out of a 4-for-19 grass dam (227K); 1 of 2 foals to race on turf is a green winner (3-for-28 Cryptonite Kid 322K grass); seeks a massive improvement 2nd-time out for a trainer 0-for-13 with this angle since 2013.
Cowboy Prince
6 weeks since a good-closing trip posting his best Beyer since Saratoga dirt; would be a major factor if can move forward off latest and has a good target to rally past in the speedy Drama Coach for this; the 2-back winner captured next 2 starts with 82-78 Beyers; will be hard to hold off late if ready for best off the bench.-Art Gropper

Race 7

This Is Nice (IRE)
Her three turf starts since arriving in America haven't necessarily been poor performances, but it does look like she's going to need to show more than she has to get the better of this bunch; looking at this as being a tough spot for her to try to go after her second career win.
Theatre Star
Lightly raced 4-year-old is by a top turf sire and she was much improved at second asking after finding herself in a tough maiden event in her career debut; third-place finisher from latest won next out at Aqu on 12/6 going 1m vs. 35k MCL's with a 59 Beyer; Pompa-owned filly finds a decent spot to meet up with winners for the first time.
Money Money
Her form appears to be heading in the wrong direction entering this race, but it might be worth noting that she's only making her second start back in this barn, and that she did run well when previously a member of this barn; she has at least mild appeal.
Judy G
This doesn't look like a bad spot for her to get back over turf while meeting up with winners for the second time and perhaps the assignment fo Rosario is an indication that her connections feel she's ready to run a good one; runner up from latest won next out here on 12/26 going 1 1/16m vs. 25k OPC's with a 78 Beyer.
Pyrite Smokin
She's one of two signed on in this spot for the Iadisernia barn, and like Money Money, this is her second start since moving back into this barn; feel that Money Money is the stronger of the two.
Yes It's Pink
This barn has been very live at this meeting and they are more than capable of having one ready for a top try after a layoff; third-place finisher from latest won next out at Aqu on 12/1 going 1 1/16m over turf vs. N1X alw. rivals with an 88 Beyer; she has the look of a top contender.
Bustle
Feel that this filly is elgible to bounce back from a couple of sub par performanes after being given some time off, and it looks like she's been doing some nice work in the a.m. lately; Castellano has won with 8 of 20 (40%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting.
Stick to Your Guns
Not sure that her best effort is quite strong enough to get over on the top contenders in here and it doesn't look like the shape of this race will favor her late running style; third-place finisher from latest won next out at Sar on 8/28 going 1m over turf vs. 35k OPC's with a 76 Beyer.
Love Stanza Chance
She's been known to put together a pretty decent performance from time-to-time, but she's probably going to need to see horses like Yes It's Pink and Bustle show up with less than their best to have a chance at something more than a minor award.-Brian Pochman

Race 8

Oasis At Midnight
Gets an extra panel in which to make her run after passing runners late in her return from the break; don't know that she's a great fit at the local level and she will start from the fence again, but she boasts some interesting interim drills; maybe for a minor share.
Tap It Easy
Tries open company while stretching out a panel after running into an open lengths winner in her first start of the year; Florida bred goes for a barn that boasts excellent numbers second back from the break and she did break her maiden first out over the track last winter; worth a look.
Unseen Visitor
Failed to finish after getting taken down by a distressed runner in her local turf debut a week and a half back; filly didn't have much to offer on dirt out West earlier in her career but she has had a while to continue getting acquainted with the local surroundings and the barn hits at a nice clip second back from the break.
Parc Monceau
Beaten chalk turns back off a solid placing in her return to the level while making her first start since Saratoga last summer; gray ran big at a one turn mile in New York last spring and she should get a solid clip to run at in this one; with a top second out barn in her corner she looks to be the one they'll have to hold off.
Cloudy Vow
It's been a while since this gal earned her maiden victories and she's settled for a handful of minor awards since; her last dirt try in allowance company was solid and she's G2 SP at this one turn mile trip; don't know that she's good enough to win this, but the price should be right to try and get her in the exotics mix.
Ever Awesome
Recent graduate brings speed to the table for her first crack with winners; she didn't start to improve until she was dropped in for a tag and she will be facing a better bunch than she's used to in here so she'll need to show up with her best, but she does figure to be prominent from the bell today.
Lady Clara
Mare wasn't close to the winner in any of her starts last year or earlier this month; she did return to work ok for this, but she was well off one of the bigger gals in here in that last one and there's not much to suggest a big move forward is on tap; have to pass on this longshot.
Antipathy
Lightly raced filly makes her first start in 10 months after earning a career best number at the trip and level here last spring; 4 year old gets Lasix for her return and she did break her maiden over the local main track; barn has had some recent luck with its returnees and they also boast big numbers with runners getting the medication; she's run well fresh in the past and looms the main danger.-Steve Grabowski

Race 9

Comme Chez Soi
Barn is on the patient side so fact this gal won at first asking speaks volumes; and she overcame the trouble to win; miss got a feel of the surface, Rocco strings along; could see her sitting 4 of 5 off a legit pace primed to pounce.
Wicked Temper
Maybe she just wanted grass all along; an exact month before she posted the recorded drill after the last win; would lean toward watching how she performs at this level.
Sea Bubble
Connections thought enough of her to try the stakes 2 back; would expect her to grow into her skin nicely as she is kin to Grade 1 winner and over $1.2 million grass earner Sand Springs; interesting.
Cool Faith
Toss last; she was steadied early and never got untracked; she at least got a taste of the surface and showed renewed energy in the drill on Monday; show horse in the race two back won next out in a $250K stakes and then was 2nd beaten 3 quarters in a $125K stakes; she gets class from the bottom side as dam took a Grade 2 and earned over $700K; expect much better effort.
Nutmeg
Lemon Drop Kid about 12% with first-time turf runners in a 443-runner sample; sire won twice at 2, won multiple Grade 1s, never tried turf; dam took 1 sprint, was 2nd in best turf moment; this is her first to roll; look for rider to send and try to steal it.
Danalin
Miss comes off the even effort; Pleaa tries to shake things up with the blinks and miss could be more focused this time; would expect her to move forward.
Elle Starlight
It's possible she just needed the last; the pedigree is there as dam won over $350K on grass alone; with her style, she needs a hot pace and clear sailing for the best result; look for her late if at all.
Market Magic
A Mott at 45-1 in the debut is a gift; like the way she was inching toward the winner in last; she has almost already repaid her $33K purchase price; should be in the picture late if at all.
Maco Light
Nothing wrong with the grass debut and she has something to build on now; clever move on the 23rd says she is feeling pretty good about herself too; she got the ideal 3-hole trip in the lone win; could be compromised by the slot here.
Dame Dorothy
Had to work, but she make the chalk eaters smile; miss cost a ton and she should turn out a success as kin to millionaire Mrs. Lindsay; respect.
Bird Maker
Tough beat in the Golden Rod but she was still coming late; toss the synthetic effort and the form brightens; should be a major threat if she gets a chance to suit up.
Sea Queen
Never easy to win long at first asking but she looked professional doing it; show horse that day graduated next out and has taken 2 $100K stakes since; the future is bright for this gal as she is kin to Grade 1 winner and near $300K turf earner Nereid.
Morethanawarning
Three regressions since the coming out party; miss can be her own worst enemy with limited speed; would expect rider to take a hold, try to get her to settle, then make the one run.-Brian Mulligan

Race 10

Silver Sashay
Respect the fact that she brings some early speed with her but her one turf start was an encouraging performance and she is going to need a top try to have a chance at the top spot; runner up from latest won next out here on 1/15 going 6f vs. 20k claimers with an 87 Beyer.
Negrita Tata
Not only was her career best Beyer Speed Figure earned over this turf course, but she's a winner over this turf course at today's distance; she's capable of getting herself into the the mix against these if she brings her 'A' game to the table.
Tillie the Tigress
She's run pretty well the last three times she's been seen sprinting over turf but she's likely going to need to show up with the sharpest performance of her career to get the job done in this spot; perhaps it's best to limit her chances to a spot underneath in the exotics.
Sunrise Kitty
She has a very live look to her in this spot and really like the idea of her turning back in distance for her second start back from a layoff; this barn has been strong with turf sprinters and the runner up from her latest race returned to win next out here on 1/24 going 7 1/2f over turf vs. 62k OPC's with a 90 Beyer.
One Fast Frog
Tough to ignore what this barn has been doing at this meeting and this half-sister to G3 winner Sky Alliance (2-10, 321k over turf) might appreciate getting another opportunity over turf; third-place finisher from latest won next out at Crc on 12/28 going 1m vs. 25k OPC's with a 79 Beyer.
Maelys Hope
This looks like it can prove to be a tough spot for this mare to land in if this race has to be taken off the turf as there are a few horses in the main body of this race who will have legitimate appeal racing over the main track; runner up from latest won next out at Tdn on 8/2 going 5 1/2f vs. 4k N2Y claimers with a 61 Beyer.
Letshootpool
Maybe getting back over turf can help serve as a little bit of a wake up call for this stakes placed mare, but it's just difficult to view her in a favorable light when considering what she's done in her most recent starts.
Magic Mesa
Outside of a start over a sloppy surface, she's run very well since moving into this barn, and she's going to have the look of a contender whether this race is run over turf or the main track; her big early speed gives her the look of a gate-to-finish threat.
Freewest
Her dirt form isn't much to look at but she commands respect based on what she's shown to be capable of sprinting over turf; she hails from a high win percentage barn and the winner from her latest race returned to win next out here on 1/15 going 5f over turf vs. 20k OPC's with an 86 Beyer.
Manero
Multiple stakes placed mare figures to appreciate getting back over turf, and she's making her first start after a claim for the Ziadie barn; Saez is a go-to rider for this outfit and it's interesting to see her turn back to a sprint distance for this.
Vianney Lane
Her form sprinting over turf hasn't been bad at all and she's making her first start for a barn that does well with new acquisitions; it looks like they tightened the screws in her most recent workout and viewing the presence of Rosario as a positive indicator.-Brian Pochman
