Race 2 Kitchen Police Figures pretty salty; not only looked good beating maidens in the mud at CD Nov. 22 but then came here and was a fine 2nd in a spot like this Dec. 20; layoff since is a tad worrisome, as is the fact he's now offered for a tag, but at least it's a BIG tag and trainer Ward is superb off the bench; bullet :47.20 move here Jan. 18 and strong :47B here Feb. 2 (3rd fastest of 101 that day) bode well.   Rodriguez Showed talent last summer at CBY when a game winner but the pattern since is worrisome - 2 months off/dull return at HAW/2 more monthsoff; pulled up here Jan. 19; at least there's not another layoff and no big panicky drop but there are surely more questions than answers attached to this guy.   Ucanchangethename Came out firing to win his debut on AP Polytrack easily last June 14; however, then came nearly 7 months off and his 2 return tries, at TAM, weren't very pretty; the good news is he was facing some toughies and was NOT offered for a tag; while he's in for a tag today it's still a big tag; DiVito also adds blinkers (1 for last 6, 17%, first time blinkers).   Irish Media Goes for a 3rd straight win, which is nice; that being said, it's not only first time here (has raced only at WO) but first time on dirt AND he's up in price; at least that class hike is encouraging and heck, he's been working at CRC (dirt) the past month or so and they certainly could have stayed there so it's encouraging that opted to ship; has tactical speed and those aforementioned recent works are encouraging.   Sweepin Romance Solid 3rd in a spot like this Dec. 20 (not far behind Kitchen Police in 2nd); then kept to his task well to be 3rd going longer here Jan. 10; cuts back to what may be a better trip; after all, his lone win and 1 of his 2 2nds came sprinting and while he ran on decently for 2nd going a mile here last time he may be best suited at this game; worked since and nice not only that there isn't a drop, but actually he's moved UP in value.   French Quarter So was it blinkers, the drop or experience that led to that nice maiden win at WO Dec. 7?; probably a bit of each; now hasn't run for 2 months, it's first time vs. winners and first time on dirt so there are some significant hurdles, but he has worked well here of late and it's not as if he's facing any monsters; also nice to see Mattine moves him UP in value.   Three Quarter Roy Not only looked super blasting maidens on a sloppy track here Nov. 30 but that was enough to earn a stakes shot at TAM Jan. 4; OK, so that didn't go so well but today he's down in class and back to the track he knows best, with a work since; also reunited with Chamafi who sure showed the knack with him the one they partnered (6-length maiden romp here Nov. 30); big player so long as there are no ill effects from that TAM debacle. - Michael Hammersly Race 3 Malibu Master Can be forgiven that first defeat when suffering through a very wide journey; his prolific sire won 1 of 2 attempts and 33K; the dam lost her only race; among the winning siblings is 149K earner Lecturing Lynn.   Saker Falcon Progeny of Birdstone, a multiple G1 winner who garnered 1.57 million, have scored in 20 out of 237 debuts; the dam went zero for 2 in her career; winning siblings include 83K bankroller One Sock Down.   Something Peaceful This colt's sire won a G2 stakes and 224K in total (descendants of Run Away and Hide are 7 for 58 as far as winning their first test); the dam was without a tally in 4 attempts; winning sibs include 19K earner Occam's Razor.   Taketothestreets His most recent breeze from the gate was encouraging; his sire, a pure sprinter, won multiple G1s and 831K (offspring of Street Boss have won 20 out of 101 debuts); the dam went 3 for 16 earning 127K; sib to 503K earner Fifteen Love.   Successful Runner In the money every time and has faced above average competition in each attempt; he raced evenly in the last run when chasing sharp fractions, just missing the place in the final yards; could find himself much closer to the lead in this spot.   Accelerare Had the misfortune of running into powerhouse Moreno in that second career start at Belmont; the grey's sire won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and 1.31 million; the dam went 10 for 19 earning 180K; sib to G3 winner Sing Baby Sing who notched 485K.   Grand Cicero Can prove a major threat now if able to clear from this outside slot; he was cooked in a duel in the last test but may be overbet here on the basis of the Beyer he earned in that 11/9 effort at the Big A; still have to respect his proven gate speed. - Jim Kachulis Race 4 Seoul Bullet (KOR) Failed a recent turf experiment vs. $50K maidens, from which the third-place finisher exited to wire $75K maidens with a 66 Beyer; his debut in a similar spot as this wasn't bad, and he figures to get back on track with the up-and-coming Jaen taking over in the saddle; preferred.   Wingate Hall Son of Street Sense is plunging to the lower ranks off a fade job in a turf route, while shortening up and changing surfaces; has been working fast at Palm Meadows for a trainer bearing weak numbers with blinkers on; trainer/rider combo is 0 for 14 at the meet; a wild card.   Sea Zar Run Gelding is moving up off back-to-back seconds, a position which he's filled on five occasions; trainer is 0 for 7 with 1-7 day comebackers over the past five years; has yet to crack 50 on the Beyer scale, and should only be used underneath in vertical wagers.   Larcenyinmyheart Couldn't keep up in a pair of seven and a half-furlong tilts for $35K maidens on the grass, and is getting some much-needed class relief; trainer's had a quiet meet, but he sports impressive turf/dirt numbers; can see him getting back into the groove at what should be a square price.   Tappintothemusic Got drilled on the grass in his debut for Walder, who's scored at a 37% clip second-time off the claim during the last five years ($2.25 ROI); perhaps he'll find his calling as a closing sprinter on the dirt, the surface over which he rallied for third in his debut; leading rider Castellano was 4 for 7 at the meet for this barn heading into this week.   Soccerholic Has burned lots of money since he was claimed for $16K here in September; gelding is returning from a layoff while picking up the gifted Rosario, who's 2 for 7 at the meet aboard Walder charges; don't believe that he's up to the task at hand.   Quarton Lake Homebred tested Florida-bred maiden special opposition without making an impact two weeks ago in his debut; trainer won at an 8% rate with maiden second-timers adding blinkers during the past five years ($1.20 ROI): speed threat? - Ron Gierkink Race 5 Drover Road He deserves some credit for the way that he was able to outrun his odds over this turf course two races ago, but a slow early pace had a lot to do with it, and the early tempo in this race looks like it will be much livelier.   Theros This colt is out of a multiple G1 winning dam who won 5 of 10 starts for $1 million, including 1-for-1 over turf for 450k, and it's interesting to see him getting Lasix for the first time in his 3-year-old racing debut; Saez has won with 5 of 17 (29%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting.   Camden Street Half-brother to Stakes winner Kilderry (4-13, 178k over turf) ran to his backing in his career debut and he's eligible to be ready for his best performance to date while meeting up with winners for the second time and making his first start as a 3-year-old; he's tough to ignore while going out for a strong trainer/jockey tandem.   Sea of Faces It is fair to question most dirt form in this race and this colt has shown enough in his two most recent races to be given the look of a top contender if this race has to be moved to the main track.   Sniper (GB) He was G1 tested racing in Ireland and he was last seen getting the better of five rivals to earn his first career win; this isn't a soft spot for his first start in America, and he's making his first start beyond seven furlongs, but he shows up for a sharp turf barn and benefits from the services of a fine turf rider.   Copa Del Rey He showed up with a solid performance in his first start over turf in his latest outing but he is going to need to step up his game to get the better of this field; willing to upgrade his chances if this race has to be taken off the turf.   Ironicus He was an impressive winner in his turf debut at second asking and this looks like a very realistic spot for him to meet up with winners for the first time; this colt is a 1/2 to multiple graded stakes placed Minister's Joy (7-33, 272k over turf), G3 winner Quiet Harbor (6-9, 256k over turf) and multiple stakes winner Seal Cove (6-10, 257k over turf); Rosario has won with 3 of 6 mounts for this barn at the current meeting.   Nowhere to Run He's by a strong turf sire and he surprised a field with a solid performance in breaking his maiden at second asking; Anstu-owned colt might appreciate getting back over turf after a synthetic surface start in his latest outing.   Concorde's March Respect the fact that he has some early speed to employ but he'll have to be ready to take his game to another level if he's planning on keeping himself involved in the running through the final furlong against these.   Morning Calm Have to respect what he did against 12 rivals in his career debut and he has to be considered a contender in this spot based on that performance; New York-bred colt has a good deal of potential behind him at this point in time. - Brian Pochman Race 6 Luck Seeker These are his friends; only beaten a length the other times for this price; winner of last repeated next out, was 2nd beaten a head in a $83.2K NC allowance; there is a grass winner in the family that earned nearly $300K; lean toward watching one.   Golden Rifle Ghostzapper about 10% with first-time turfers in a 162-runner sample; sire took juvenile debut by 9 with a 99 Beyer, was 2004 Horse of the Year, only lost twice, never turfed; dam took a Group 2, adored grass, earned over $450K; look for rider to send hard and try to steal it.   Vperyod Seryoga He seemed to be on the verge two back in the return, and then pushed in against winners; why?; after this many slices, it's just to locate the upside.   Gridiron Great Over 3 clear in last and he seems to be on the improve; capable barn due to heat up, check out the dozen slices.   Pernicious Lack of speed a legit concern; the 2 siblings that tried grass were out of money in 4 combined grass starts; slight improvement and he will be right in the thick of it.   Wine Burglar In for $55K less than purchase price, he may have disliked the yielding course in last; 3/23 winner repeated in an $88K stakes, has been 2nd beaten just over a length in a $100K stakes; if this guy has any talent, he figures to show it here.   Win Exchange A regression last time and the extended layoff till last December is a concern; at least there is a double turf winner in the tree; considering the way he went backward last time, would be very careful here.   To the Stars At least he got a feel of the surface; 2 siblings tried grass and the best result was a second on grass; note runner regressed in the last 2nd off the layoff run.   Just Foolin Around A bit more keen to run with the blinks last time but he had nothing left; all 3 siblings did win on grass and one banked over $225K; homebred could pick it up on the drop.   Trade Rumor Hung wide in last and he was coming on late; the place horse in last graduated in a MSW at FG with a 74 Beyer; he was beaten double digits in the last 2 return attempts. - Brian Mulligan Race 7 Racing Aptitude Multiple stakes winner has done some nice work racing over turf from 10 starts but it is of some concern to see that he enters this race off of a sub par performance after moving out of the Baffert barn; perhaps it's a negative to see this Dizney-homebred being sent out with a 50k tag attached.   Madris He's been a pretty consistent performer racing over turf, and like the idea of him going dirt-to-turf for his second start back from a layoff, but just not sure that his best effort is quite strong enough to get the job done in this spot.   Burn the Mortgage Stakes placed runner is making his first turf start since being claimed by Maker and have to respect the presence of Castellano as he's won with 10 of 25 (40%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting; he's won 6 of his 19 starts over turf, including 2 of 3 over this turf course.   Where's the Baby He started off 2014 the right way after going winless in 2013 but he will have to find his way back to one of his sharper starts if he's planning on making it back-to-back wins against these; Richard Sherman-homebred is capable on his best day.   Photo Shoot He has turf in his pedigree and he's faced some strong competition in a number of his starts over turf; late running gelding has at least mild appeal as he gets ready to make his first turf start since February 2012.   Rule Number Six Not only does he appear to be at his best racing over dirt, but he has a little bit of a shaky look to him entering this race; he is capable of making some noise at this level of competition on his best day, but not sure that can be expected at this point in time.   Border Song (FR) Two of his four starts since arriving in America have been fine performances and he looks like a solid fit at this 50-45k claiming level; third-place finisher from latest won next out at Lrl on 10/31 going 1m over turf vs. 25k OPC's with an 88 Beyer.   Serious Indeed He has some early speed and he's been a pretty consistent performer but this has to be considered a tough step up in class for him after being claimed for 15k when last seen; prefer to give others the nod in this one.   Renzo Bertoni He's probably going to need the sharpest performance of his career to come out on top in this one, but a couple of his recent starts have been sharp, and he got the job done in his first start with Lasix in his latest outing.   Ledokol He's the only one in here with a single win next to his name and he's never run a race that is strong enough to suggest that he can jump up with a competitive performance against these.   Big John B Tough veteran seems to love the game and he's making his first start after a claim for a barn that scores well in that category; he's being reunited with Bravo and he was aboard for a sharp score back in August.   Yari Stakes placed gelding has basically been a model of consistency in his starts routing over turf and his early speed can help him as he tries clear some traffic before getting into the first turn; like to see Rosario aboard again and it's interesting to see the addition of blinkers for this. - Brian Pochman Race 9 Via Villaggio Bernardini has been a poor influence as a turf sire and this mare has yet to prove that she can be at her best racing over turf; that said, her connections make her tough to ignore and Castellano has won with 10 of 25 (40%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting.   Peggy Joyce She finished behind one of today's key rivals in Dene Court in her latest outing, but this mare benefits from a favorable inside post today, and she might be ready for a top try while making the third start of her current form cycle.   Unhedged Since going three-for-three to begin her career, she's struggled to maintain a forward gear through the stretch in her races; have to respect the impact her early speed can have on the way that this race shapes up, but others might have more to offer late; winner from latest won next out at Tam on 1/25 going 5f over turf in a 100k stakes with a 94 Beyer.   Celestial Kitten Multiple graded stakes placed mare shows up for Calbrese and Ziadie, and that alone might be a reason to label her a contender; however, she is light on recent winning form and she's winless from six starts over this turf course.   Lily the Pink She hasn't been shy about settling for minor awards in her career, and outside of a stakes placing three starts back at KD, her overall form has really only been so-so; perhaps a spot underneath in the exotics is within reach, but looking toward others for the top spot.   Zero Game (IRE) Her first start in America was a sharp winning performance, and not only was she in tough facing graded stakes competition when last seen, but she might not have cared for playing the role of early pacesetter.   Mystic Love Multiple stakes winner ran some nice races over turf as a 2-year-old, but she didn't have much success during her 3-year-old season, and this looks like a tough spot for her 4-year-old racing debut; her recent workouts look sharp, but going to lean in another direction.   Triple Charm (GB) She was beaten by a couple of today's rivals in her first start in America in her latest outing, but that was after a very long layoff, and it might be worth noting the success that this barn has had when sending horses out for their second start after this type of a layoff.   Unbelievable Dream Her lack of early speed can create some problems for her, but she's a G3 winner racing over turf, and one of the better performances of her career was run over this turf course; perhaps the addition of blinkers can help sharpen her up a little bit.   Dene Court She's another in here with multiple stakes winning credentials and she looks like she's heading in the right direction entering this race; however, she is going to need to be careful to avoid an early pace dispute and she hasn't posted a win since July 2012.   Waterway Run She's a G3 winner racing overseas and her only start in America prior to this was in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf; she's clearly an interesting option to consider while making her first start with Lasix and her first start for a top turf barn.   Mass Invasion A few horses in the main body of this race have decent dirt form, especially Via Villagio, and this can prove to be a pretty tough test for this mare if this race has to be taken off the turf; runner up from latest won next out here on 1/18 going 1 1/8m in a 294k stakes with a 90 Beyer.   Danalake She ran some nice races early on in her career, but she only made two starts as a 3-year-old and this looks like it can prove to be a pretty tough spot for her 4-year-old racing debut.   Pixie Devil She really hasn't run a bad race since her career debut and like to see the improvement she's shown along the Beyer Speed Figure scale; she has fine route speed and Castellano has won with 4 of 7 (57%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting. - Brian Pochman Race 10 arine Turns back for the surface switch while making his first start in 9 months here; 5 year old did break his maiden over the local sod last year, but that came going long and don't know that he'll be able to offer his best first time back at this short trip; just watching him here.   Ari's Pride Offered little early foot in his last 2 at the local trip while finishing behind several of these at big prices on the board; gray has had success at this sprint trip in the past, but in his current form he's going to have to step things up to have a say in the outcome; passing on him.   Cactus Son Runner up in 4 straight makes his first local start in his return from the brief freshening; his tactical foot always has him in a good tracking spot early and though he's won just once at 5 panels, he can certainly handle the trip; class relief looks to make him the main danger.   Bea Wildcat Got going too late while breaking from the fence against limited winners on the main track last month; gelding makes his surface debut in this spot and his sire does get 14% winners from his initial turf starters; SP dam didn't win on the green but one of her 2 foals to try it won first time over the stuff.   Rojo Verde Didn't factor against a better bunch in his Tampa finale after a solid effort behind one of these after tracking a hot clip there a couple of months back; gelding should find himself closer to the top early while in against some softer rivals today and the price should again be right; consider.   Didn't Take It Gets the top pilot for another crack at the level after failing to get to a couple of these when third on the class drop last time; he did win at the local trip 2 back and maybe he was still feeling the effort while returning in just 11 days, but maybe he's just a notch below the bigger guys in here; rider switch warrants him a look.   Wire Funds Returns at the level after beating some of these at odds on while making his first start off this sharp outfit's claim; he's taken 4 of his last 5, is a career .450 hitter at this trip on the lawn and it's nice to see him back in a protected spot; he'll take plenty of tote support again, but from close range, he'll likely prove tough to hold off.   Starship Sulu Tries better in his return to the green after a near miss against conditioned claimers on the main track last month; gelding ran ok on the local sod 2 back, but he's winless on the green and doesn't appear to be a solid fit with these; have to look elsewhere for the winner.   Thomas Hill Ran well for second money in his course debut first time at the level off the barn's claim and has a right to be better second back from the freshening; gelding should get an honest clip in front of him and he'll get a switch to a top pilot for this one; price should be right to include him for a barn that's gone well here.   Ayrton Last runner up turns back to sprint while catching a much better bunch in this spot; though he may have more to offer late in this one he hasn't run very fast and the barn has had a rather tough local meeting; can't back him today.   Pirates Vow Draws outside after getting used in pace and finishing behind several of these on the drop to this level in his second back from the break; he has shown in the past that he doesn't need the lead for his best and maybe that helps him from out here; hasn't been on his best game of late, but maybe he's set to turn things around at a price in this spot. - Steve Grabowski
